If staying undefeated is the key should we stop playing the big boys in ooc?

The quick answer to your question is yes if you play a crap OOC schedule and go undefeated to win the conference championship you will be in the playoffs.
I do think playing a tough OOC opponent and you win it will help you if you were not to win your conference championship.
Let’s say this year Georgia loses in the sec championship. That opening win against Oregon would keep them in the playoff I believe.

Championship teams win those tough OOC games. Dodging teams is not how you set a culture worth having.
To your example- TCU will lose tiebreakers in playoff seeding to teams with a tougher schedule.

Yeah but if we would’ve played La Tech instead of Florida state we would be 5th right now with a clear path to playoffs.

Agree, Look at michigan... Uconn, rado state, hawaii. Whats the point on risking a loss if you'll get rewarded for playing garbage teams. We would be top 4 if we play uconn instead of FSU

same can be said if we'd just beaten FL St.
Also LSU has one of the highest/hardest SOS in the country. The CFP Committee looks at that number.

SEC requires each school play a Power 5 school each year.

I mean bottom line we just should beat teams like UCLA and FSU. We dont need to get soft, we need to play better and beat those teams.
I fully expect us to easily take care of FSU next year with the losses they will probably have compared to us.

TCU is playing with fire with all of their come from behind wins they've had. Eventually they will get burned, possibly this weekend, and then that will bite them in the arse since they can't hang their hat on a somewhat tough OOC schedule

Who you beat should matter more than who you lost to. Anybody can have a bad week but it doesn't necessarily mean you're a bad team - if Ohio state would have lost to Northwestern last week I don't think anyone would suddenly think they're a bad team. The committee needs to place more value on wins and not just having 1 or fewer losses

But you also have to think, even without the FSU game, all SEC teams have played a harder schedule than any other conference.
I don't think SEC falls into the category as a TCU or Oregon with out of conference games.
Championship teams do win those games though:
Clemson/Auburn 2016
Alabama/FSU 2017
Clemson/A&M 2018
LSU/Texas 2019
Alabama/Conference only 2020
UGA/Clemson 2021

Being undefeated is not the key, not getting your arse beat at home by a team likely to finish 11-1 is the key.
Given the coaching change and state of the program at the time it would have been a decent season to at least start with an OOC scrub, but then again even the biggest sunshine pumpers would not have expected us to win the SEC West

Agreed. What's been the biggest beef we've had in previous years with CFP selection (and good bowl selections)? Teams being chosen for their "good" records that include terrible OOC games.
I think we should continue to play early and OOC games against challenging teams because (1) it looks good later in the year - especially if we win, and (2) I think it sets the pace for summer and fall practice.
Think about the 2011 season: it's just my opinion, but if we hadn't smoked Oregon in the first game I don't think we go undefeated. Even if we'd lost that game, having to gear up for a challenging opening game would have put us ahead of the curve.
And, yeah, I'll give you the RECENT problems we've had against middle-tier teams in game 1. But I think you can lay that on the incompetence of Miles at the end of his tenure (that Whisky game at Lambeau sucked) and the arrogance of the Ogre (Sissy blue shirts, anyone?).
Neither coach had LSU prepared to take on a team that had prepared hard for an SEC opponent. That's on them, and we paid for it in spades.
By all accounts, CBK is a different bird. Give him a year to prepare for a good OOC team at the open (along with a good roster), and I'll take that game every time vs. a game against NobodyU.

I would hardly call Florida state a big boy. I don’t like playing even a decent team in any opener though. Play a tune up and get your feet wet first.

The big ooc games are cool, gives fans a way to see a team we typically wouldn't. But it hurt us bad this year. New coach, new players, new drama, big first game. We almost had it in the bag, but we messed up. I'm typically against these games, but it's a money grab. Pros and cons.
