Helicopter parenting really started to take off in the 80s, and my Mom got caught up in it. Everyone started freaking out about abductions and kidnappings though the data did not back up the hysteria. This is a good read, and goes into the subject pretty well.

The LP Sherriff or someone posted on FB about some candy fentanyl this year and the first response was "I guess I'll go trick or treating this year."

Yes, some insanely high percentage is family taking the child and mostly a dad without custody rights.

To be fair there were nationwide child trafficking pedo rings busted in the late 70’s. Also when the Boy Scout molestations were occurring.
The Clown and the Candy Man on discovery + goes into the John David Norman ring, Snow Killings, John Wayne Gacy, and Dean Corall’s killings

What’s this about?
Back in the mid 70s a guy in Texas, around Pasadena, poisoned his kid's Pixie Stix to collect insurance money. The child died. He also poisoned his other kids candy to make it look random, but they didn't eat it. He was executed about ten years later.
I lived in Pearland at the time, and they banned trick or treat for years. The rebels who went ahead and trick or treated enjoyed "treats" such as pennies and toothbrushes.
I moved to BR in 1978 and was stoked to be able to trick or treat freely again, but my mom NEVER let me eat a Pixie Stick after that. She still hates to see my kids eat them.

I've been looking for edibles in my kid's candy since she started trick or treating. Been disappointed so far.

So, you're telling me all those years that my Dad told me he had to "inspect" my candy before could have it was based off a hoax???
He was inspecting it to see what he wanted to steal after you were out to bed
At least that’s how it worked at my house growing up

pretty sure I saw a gang of mexicans that stepped out of a white van at academy and were handng out fentanyl laced candy with razor blades sticking out. they may or may not have abducted a young blonde haired white girl. But I did see them following around a white woman.

I like the good ole myth about drugs being put in candy as if dealers are just giving out drugs for free.

I was just out of LSU law school working in Houston when this happened. The bastard poisoned his son for $5,000 life insurance. I had a very slight participation in this case since the perp had previously worked for my employer and had called one of his former co-workers to ask how much strychnine it would take to kill a person. After news of the murder broke the day after Halloween, our employee called us in Legal to say he had called the police and they were coming to interview him. I sat in on the interview.

Now people are warning parents to look out for "THC candy". No one who buys THC candy is giving it away for free.
"Imma go spend $800 on edibles to get all the neighborhood kids high on Halloween."
"Say baw, why dont you just eat those yourself."
"Thats a much better idea"

You're telling me that tampered trick-or-treat candy was the 1970s/80s "Random men are stalking my children at Target" hysteria?

Fentanyl is money. They would lose money to give it out during Halloween. That’s how I always knew it was bullshite.
