Ranking of States with the worst roads

State and local governments spend billions each year on road maintenance and operations, but does it amount to better roads for taxpayers?
MoneyGeek analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Census Bureau to learn more about America’s urban road infrastructure, find the states with the best and worst road quality and determine if more state spending translated to better roads.
Our findings suggest that taxpayers are not necessarily getting their money’s worth. At best, they are getting just enough road investment to maintain the current condition of roads, but not enough to improve them.

KEY FINDINGS:
About 1 in 10 U.S. roads are in poor condition, but urban roads are even worse: 1 in 5 are in poor condition.
California and Rhode Island were the states ranked worst for road roughness, with 44% and 41% of roads in poor condition, respectively.
New Hampshire and Alabama had the best roads in the U.S. and spent some of the lowest capital outlay per mile ($9.82 and $6.44, respectively).
States generally spend in proportion to how much their roads are utilized, reflecting both the need to address wear and tear and how roads are funded — typically, via gas taxes.
However, how much each state spends on roads has no correlation with road quality after adjusting for vehicle miles.

Where are the ‘good roads’ that keep us from being Number 1?

Best roads I can actually recall were in Indiana. Was pretty impressed with the quality of their roads.

Figured Alabama would at least be bottom half.

I must’ve driven a couple thousand miles through California over the summer and there’s no way their roads are as bad as ours. All of the freeways and major highways are solid for the most part, and even many of the desert roads were great aside from some deceptive dips. Hell I spent a lot of time in Death Valley and the paved roads out there are better than any in New Orleans.

I can definitely vouch for New Hampshire. Their roads are fricking amazing. 3 things New Hampshire does right…roads, ice cream shops & candy shops. I swear I couldn’t drive 1/4 mile without seeing a ice cream or candy shop.

I always thought the California roads I drove on were in good shape.
And a lot of Alabama roads are like garbage

Lakeview should have LA number one all by itself.

I’m surprised CA is up there.
Never driven over there but that just seems surprising is all

When I lived uptown, my side street was repaved and it was like living on a hwy bc everyone knew that was the one street that wouldn’t break your car.

So do we need a tank to drive in the 7 before Louisiana?

Omit New Orleans and LA jumps up 20 spots

Montana at 18 is surprisingly low. Outside of interstates and some of the highways, the roads are as garbage as you’d expect a low population state with mountains and severe winters to be. You go through at least one windshield a year.

I’ve been to many states and Louisiana is not 8th. They’re 48-50th just like every other ranking

Been all over the west, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Louisiana has the worst roads of any state I've ever personally been too, and it's not close.
I just came home last month for a two week visit after a whole year in San Jose, and the state of the roads in Louisiana was a shock. Just utter garbage, no matter where you go.

Man, I feel like Rhode Island should be known for having good roads.

How is that fricking possible?I was expecting some mountain or rural states, but really, Rhode Island? Florida literally has higher elevation than it and may be a thousand times larger than it. How fricking pathetic. The Denver metro area is bigger than Rhode Island. I’m willing to bet it takes less time to drive from end to end of that state than it takes to get from downtown Denver to the Denver airport at rush hour.
