It has to be live TV only. No apparent lip syncing. Let's add the caveat of offering one band and one solo performer.

It doesn't have to be a "superstar". Just an unusually amazingly performance done live.

I'm still thinking about mine.

If I had to choose now it would be these two:

Solo:

Unchained Melody Righteous Brothers

Band

Freddie Mercury Live Aid

there is ONE and ONLY ONE correct answer here.

Elvis Costello - Radio Radio SNL

Back when musical artists actually fought 'the man'.

quote:

. Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels was furious. According to some reports, he raised his middle finger at Costello and kept it up until the unapproved song was over.

Bawitdaba - Kid Rock at VMAs

A relatively unknown Kid Rock performing Bawitdaba for the first time at the VMAs was life changing for my family and I.

I'm not a fan of Justin Timberlake's type of music, but his talent is undeniable. He and Chris Stapleton blew the roof off the CMA's on this one.

There are people who react to this on YouTube and:

A) Can't believe it's live

and

B) Can't believe they're white

I remember watching MTV do the big concert in Moscow (Moscow Music Peace Festival), back in the late 80's.

I noticed at the time, some acts translated well to the recording, some didn't (and that this was separate from how their live performances seemed to be received by the crowd).

Motley Crue and Scorpions both sounded great, album quality (and they were huge at the time, so that was a great deal). Crue was what you'd want... everything in correct tempo, a couple sleazy dancers (the Nasty Habits), one hit performed to match album version after another.
Scorpions in particular put on a fantastic show, in my opinion one of the best live recordings I've ever seen.

Ozzy looked like they had the crowd rocking, but the sound recording was awful. I remember my friend commenting- man, that guitarist is doing a hell of a solo, too bad we can't hear it.

A couple smaller acts were ok, Skid Row and Cinderella. They were giving you standard metal hits, decent quality.

Bon Jovi surprised me, not sure if the sound was set up right or not. Put a hell of a show on, but things sounded a little hollow and tinny at times (in the broadcast), and a couple songs seemed off tempo a bit. They took the headliner spot in the lineup, I thought they'd have the technical details nailed in the recording too.

A completely different genre, but amazing voice and pitch control in her third or fourth language (English) winning Norway's Got Talent competition on live national tv:
