My old garbage disposal finally died. It was 1/2 HP that seemed to work well. I am looking for opinions on what brand and power to replace it with. 1/2 vs. 3/4 HP and Moan vs. Insinkerator. Thanks.

Yep, installed an Insinkerator 3/4 hp Space saver, which is insulated and very quiet. Transferred the old cord to it, which is not a problem because it doesn't wear from vibration nor is it subject to overheating.

Mine went out a few weeks back as well. Went with Insinkerator. It was the best option for me in terms of price, availability, and durability reviews.

I literally just did this 2 weeks ago. Had a 1/2 hp insinkerator. Replaced with the Moen 3/4. Easy install and the Moen seems more quite.

Personally I would go with a 1HP Waste King. I don't expect a disposal to be that quiet so it being a bit louder than an Evolution doesn't bother me. Insinkerator uses a slower RPM induction motor, which is part of why they are quieter but they also don't grind as well (unless you get the top of the line models with multiple grind stages) and don't have the starting torque of PM motor disposals. I find even the best Insinkerators will clog on carrot peels, takes them a bit to eventually push the grinds and clear the grind chamber. The Waste King will push clear much faster, has about 1000 more RPM and more starting torque.

Don’t forget to put a fresh bead of plumber’s putty down if you have to install a new drain collar in the sink.
