I'm going to roll the dice and buck science on this one. I think when you get old your hearing wanes anyway. Both dove hunters and non dove hunters alike. If it gets bad enough you can get a hearing aid. Even it does cost me a few decibels, at least I didn't ever have to wear ear muffs in a 100 degree corn field.

I'm in your corner on this one. I no longer hunt, but when I did it never occurred to me to use ear plugs or muffs. I wanted to hear what was going on around me.

The only time I have used ear plugs is when group riding on my motorcycle with guys who run open exhaust. That crap gets real old running at highway speeds and droning in your ear for hours on end.

Both all or one will only reduce 28-31 decibels.

Oh boy, you've done it now. About to spur a whole new angry debate.

I can't imagine wearing ear plugs dove hunting. We're constantly hollering across at each other. If my buddy can't hear me making fun of his misses, what's the point in even going?

Definitely to hot for muffs of any kind. I don’t find a need for plugs in the open unless i am sitting with someone else shooting also. Low brass shells in an open field once or twice a year isn’t going to hurt me to bad is the way I look at it

So your stance is not wear any ear protection regardless, so just stay clear of the thread and move along. The OP ask about double protection, not if he should use or not use protection. Also the dude already suffer from tinnitus, so hell ya he needs something to help. Why wouldn’t anyone want to wear something as simple as earplugs even if it’s 100 degrees, really don’t think earplugs will make you any hotter.

But like I said you the outdoor badass so I expected you to be tough and give the OP bad advise.

Who tf wears earplugs when dove hunting

Well my dad was wearing hearing aids in his 50s from never wearing hearing protection. I'm also trying to set a good example to my nephews who will be hunting with me.

Somebody brought a dude to one of our hunts a couple years ago. Decked out in all brand new camo from head to toe, boots the whole nine yards. It was hot as balls. Everybody else had on shorts and a tee shirt. We set the dude up in one of the better spots in the field. He sets up this chair/slash blind thing, strapped on his ear muffs and got shite on the whole day. Everybody is yelling; Bird! Over your head! Behind You! And so on. He never hears a word. I think he killed 3. Everybody else limited out. Good times

We went quail hunting last year and I ultimately chose not to wear ear pro. My electronic muffs sometimes prevent me from getting a good cheek weld on the gun. The full on plugs were going to prevent me from having good situational awareness. The SO and FIL wore them and she kinda jumped my arse about not wearing them, but I dont think low brass in an open field is too much of an issue. Does it potentially cause permenant hearing damage? Possibly, but i think its a miniscule chance and not worth the risk of missing consequential details of what's going on around me.

And I'm extremely religious about wearing earpro, even when shooting skeet.

While that is a valid point, shotgun blasts from your gun are in fact doing damage to your ears. And lets be honest, unless you are in a shite field or a shotgun ace, you are probably gonna burn a box or 2 of shells. That is a lot of damage just to be able to yell at Tony across
the field that he missed. So you can either go to Academy and get some electronic muffs that protect your ears and allow you to hear that a flock of doves is coming or you can lose your hearing and check into the Tiniitus thread in a few years.

or maybe he just has bad ears. I know plenty of men who never hunted or worked around loud machinery that had hearing aids in their 50s and I know plenty that hunted their whole life and never wore hearing aids who never had problems

I've never seen a single person in all my life wear ear muffs dove hunting. We have a gigantic Labor Day weekend hunt on our farm that has been going on since way before I was born. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of dove hunters, including many doctors. Never have I once seen anybody wear ear muffs. I think this thread really boils down to two sides. People who dove hunt and people who are clueless about dove hunting.

I think that is an oversimplification of the two sides. Here is mine. There are two sides, those who believe that unprotected ears will suffer a degree of damage when exposed to gunshots (those who believe in medical science) and those who think it is inconsequential or that it ruins the experience. So here is what I will say again. I don't give a flying frick with what you do to your ears. I choose to protect mine and I advocate that others do the same. I don't know why you are so mad about such a simple topic.

Grown man response - Take the plugs with you. Shoot with and without them and see which is best for you. I'm 50 years old and also have tinnitus. Any loud noise sets it off. My ears are ringing right now from using my Stihl blower yesterday. I usually use ear plugs but forgot them. Might be from all the industrial sites I've been to working 27 years in construction, or all the concerts and loud music since HS, or maybe, must maybe from all the shooting I've done since 1981.

I can't believe supposedly grown men are arguing and calling each other names over hearing protection. Grow the frick up.

I’ve never dove hunted and I don’t pretend to be an expert but I own a shotgun and can’t imagine shooting that damn thing without plugs. It’s pretty loud. I’m not doubting you that dove hunters don’t wear plugs but I sure wouldn’t risk my hearing like that.

I seriously don't know what you are going on about. People who wear ear pro don't hunt? I'm almost convinced you a trolling because a normal person isn't this irrational and angry about such a simple discussion.

I have probably shot more doves than most people on this board and on multiple continents

Sounds like a new guy that needed more experienced hunters to help guide him instead of laugh at him.
