I took a bunch of ear plugs from the safety guy at work. Should I be wearing muffs on top of that or am I good with just the plugs? I already have tinnitus, don't want to mess anything else up.

Kids game me some gift cards for Father's Day and I bought a pair of Walkers' Electronic Muffs. Used them at the range a couple of weeks ago. I was impressed!

For me personally, if I’m not shooting with a silencer, I double up. If I shoot with a silencer, I also do either plugs or muffs (unless I’m hunting deer or pigs).

Walkers' Electronic Muffs

I used these prior to getting my digital plugs. Very good investment and honestly if I was hunting in a pit or somewhat close to other shooters in a blind, I would put a foam plug in my left ear and then the muffs. The volume was sufficient for me to hear fine out of just the right side.

The only downside is once it gets cold and trying to keep your head warm with those big arse muffs on. The sound get super distorted when you put a hood over them.

I double up at the indoor shooting range. Outdoor shooting, just plugs is fine.

Why would you say neither to someone wanting to protect his hearing from gun shots close by? We know you are the old OT badass but damn. I learned early own to use ear protection hunting, my podnas didn't, guess who can her now and who say HUH?

To the OP----Dove Hunting-plugs is all you need, Now Duck Blind Hunting Use the muffs.

I’ve honestly never used hearing protection in the field, whether it be bird or land animals. But last year I bought my kid a pair of the walker razor muffs. I’ve gotta say, if the earbuds work near as good, I may have a pair before dove season opens.

I’m only 32, but between hunting and working in the plant, my hearing takes a beating. Pretty sure I came close to failing my left ear the last 2 physicals. one of those “it can’t happen to me” kinda things.

Haven’t really thought of buying any yet though.

shotgun blasts in open pasture just dont really bother me. in fact, im certain all the equipment, phones ringing, and ladies at the office have had more a negative impact on my hearing than any firearms.

For the people not wearing any earpro when you shoot, you are causing irreparable damage to your ears. It is dangerous for your hearing and "just one shot" or whatever people say to justify it is idiotic. Free country and you can do what you want but it is stupid to not wear hearing protection when you shoot.

Because I've been dove hunting a million times and know that the sounds of other guns aren't a concern at all. It's not like you're crammed in a duck blind with other people. Your in a wide open field. Getting peppered/shot is a concern. Noise is not. But you do you.

Yes. It is absolutely a scientific fact that you are causing irreparable hearing damage when you shoot without earpro. Gunshot exposure is no joke on your ears.

Plugs are fine. Shooting shotguns in the air in an open field is not as severe a shock to the ear drums as other types of gun fire. My dad shot cases of shells this way every year as a younger man. He’s nearly deaf now so he doesn’t bother with ear pro. That first shot of the year without plugs makes my ears ring, so I know protection is doing some good. If I weren’t a turkey hunter, I might not care so much.
