100% its not. You are assuming the kid will hit the weight room hard and continue down a certain path. Once you get a feel for a kids work ethic though, pretty easy to project, especially by 12 imo.

Yes, commitment to the sport and work ethic certainly matter. But, I believe you also have to look at the parents and siblings. How big is this kid going to grow? Is he the only athlete in the family? Are his parents and siblings even around for practices and games? Just some examples, and not the end all/be all, but you get the point - it's an imperfect practice. But, you have to do it if you want to keep up with the Joneses.
