I think it all went downhill when Guaranty bought him and his entire operation. They obviously want him to be a more of a personality than a chef (which he is not to my knowledge) and promote himself and his brand 24/7. Quality control oversight at his restaurant has gone to shite. His daily radio show is all about seeing how many local craft beers they can prop up and drink on the air. Sure, he beat Bobby Flay and lost Food Network star but so have many others. Doesn't mean he can charge a premium for mediocre small portion food. He should have found a way to do what he (may) do best - grilling and smoking meat. If that is the line of products you are selling in stores then shouldn't that be your restaurant concept?

Wasn’t the competition a crawfish boil? I think 90% of the people on this board could beat him at that.

Although a chain, Torchy’s is good.

If you want local - Modesto on Burbank isn’t bad.

Morenita, Ideal, and that food truck on Airline & Jefferson are pretty authentic- I haven’t tried the Birria place on Cedarcrest yet.

I'm a little biased, but I still think he should have won.

He definitely is a good chef, and has the personality for tv/radio.

I'm not a huge Gov't Taco fan, just not my style of tacos, but the things I have tried have always been good.

When I went a few months ago, I did like that they added a flour tortilla option and put just a simple taco on the menu, for picky eaters like myself.

As for price, I think it's fair, I don't ever think it was advertised to be a cheap restaurant.

For the chip thing that happened, that sucks. That's just a lazy employee right there, not Jay's fault. I've had that happen at many Mexican restaurants.

There’s a strong correlation between this type of behavior and restaurant failure, unfortunately

Wasn’t there a NOLA BBQ restaurant owner who did that, and also came here to argue with people over their reviews if his place ?

I actually agree with you and I think it was a surprise when he lost. Still, he turned that loss into a great opportunity for himself and had a good thing going for a while. However it does seem he’s faded into the background a bit.

This I’m not so sure of. He’s a good personality who can cook. I can cook really, really well but I’m not a chef.

I disagree because you don’t get what you pay for. If the tacos are two bite tacos, then they better be an exceptional two bites. None of them were. All needed a generous pour of hot sauce just to make them decent. And for $5 each on average, it’s not a fair experience.

It’s his restaurant and it’s absolutely his fault. And as for a Mexican restaurant, I get a big basket for free with the start of my meal. If the chips suck, I can ask for more and they provide them. We got a handful of chips for $3 extra and my wife’s so happened to be crushed to bits (unnoticed toward the end of the meal because the pile was under a few large chips)

Other than his name, Jay clearly doesn’t give a shite about this place. He admits he’s out career climbing and leaving the restaurant in the hands of “great people”.

My guess is the pay isn’t all that great and in this market, restaurants kind of take what they can get as far as staff goes. If he’s too busy trying to be a celebrity to care about his only restaurant, the people of Baton Rouge should just let it die a quick death.

Do they not offer hot sauce if you want to spice yours up?

Honest question, I've never paid attention, but have only been to the actual restaurant twice.

They do. The tables have a bottle of Valentina and two Slap Your Momma sauces. After the first bite of each taco, Valentina was applied

I don’t see any of the pickled onions that ‘make their tacos wet’ like in the radio add.

Probably a good thing as having those bulbous toppings on one, thin corn tortilla is a recipe for a mess.

Funny you mention small portions. I had a very inadequate grilled fish taco the other night. The 2 bites of fish pale in comparison to the piece you received(I wish I had taken a pic). Told the manager about it. His attitude was what's wrong with it? I just shook my head and told the dude not to worry. Very disappointed in the product.
