Question: anyone know if you need to do anything special to install a window AC unit in a sliding window versus a single hung window?

Would you need to get a different type of unit, or does the sealing / fitting work with a side to side sliding window just as well?

If I’m understanding your question correctly, your biggest issue would be finding a way to seal above the window unit since your window slides east/west instead of north south. Window units only “expand” east/west.

You are understanding correctly, and that is my concern.

I’m guessing there are different adaptor kits or even different unit builds to accommodate that?

You can get a casement window AC unit, which are thinner and taller, but those tend to be a lot more expensive than a standard window unit.

In a pinch like a hurricane or something, you can fit a regular window unit into your east-west window and cut a piece of plywood to close the gap and hold in place the window unit on top.

And if looking for something more permanent, get enough plywood to be able to sandwich a sheet of Styrofoam between the sheets to help retain the cooling.

Or get a portable a/c unit. their exhaust hoses can be installed with vertical expansion. Sam's has a couple on sale right now - I've been looking myself.

A portable AC is a good idea, I was just looking at that as an option and it looks to be an easier install and cheaper than a casement AC.

Thanks all for the ideas and knowledge.

the top window supports and holds the unit so you will need to cut a plywood filler to put in there to cross from frame to the window slide to support the weight of it against the window.

the bigger heavier window units also have legs that help take some of the weight off of the top window so it doesnt bend too much and break it so if its a big heavy unit you might want a board that goes all the way across the whole window opening.

Get a dual hose inverter portable A/C. We have a midea, you can get the same units from Toshiba. They cost more but they cool better, are quieter and more efficient.

Agreed…I am considering exactly the same thing.
