Perdido Key bank & surf fishing

Bringing the family down to Perdido in a few weeks. I am a well-seasoned saltwater fisherman (south Louisiana), but I'm looking for any tips or advice for bank & surf fishing in the area. Decided against bringing the bay boat.
I was on google maps and it looks like the southern shoreline of Big Lagoon is fairly accessible from Johnson Beach Rd. Looks like there are some nice points, flats, and drop-offs that could be accessible from the bank or wading. Anyone ever tried this?
I've never been too successful surf fishing. Just followed local tips on bait selection (spoons) and whatnot. Not a lot of action in my attempts. Early morning topwater has lead to a few catches here and there.... I always keep my big rod out with a piece of cut bait and that typically leads to catching something big and dumb but the fight is always fun.
Any tips or advice would be appreciated!

Keep your bait in your cooler, not sitting out. The birds there will wipe you out as soon as you turn your back.

Get a bait caster and a good topwater then hit the surf at the crack of dawn, if nothing else the lady fish will keep you busy.
Also catch sand fleas and put them on a carolina rig, the pompano love them.

How do you keep the hardtails and whiting off of them?

I’ve successfully caught fish in the surf the last 2 years after never being able to do so prior. I watched a bunch of beach bum videos on YouTube. I keep it simple. I stop at lost bay in orange beach. Pick up some premade pomp rigs. 3-4 oz pyramid weights. Use live sand fleas or fish bites bait. It’s prepackaged. Look it up. Stuff works. Cast in between the sand bars. I like to throw one between first and second and then one past the second. Whichever hits is the area I start casting too. I wade out to cast. I have a 9’ and a 12’ surf rod with 5000 and 6000 size reels.

We gave it a shot a few years ago. Locals told us the secret was to use sand fleas. Zero fish caught.

If you want to catch some nice Whitings that are great to eat, just fish the surf with a small Carolina rig with a small hook and cut shrimp. Been doing that for many years with good results.

Ditto to what Success said but alternate sand fleas with fresh dead shrimp too. That will get you whiting and redfish too. Maybe even a trout. Sometimes the pomp want shrimp and sometimes sand fleas. Ghost shrimp works real good too but are hard to keep on hook.

I find using shrimp attracts catfish. Even the shrimp fish bites attracts catfish. But I will still sometimes use them.

I use 3 inch molting color gulps for flounder. Jig first thing in the morning, the flounder are up close to the beach. Find where sandbars merge with beach creating pockets. Or even better bring a floundering like and gig, we got 14 in two nights in crappy conditions, again closer in in areas with big ripples and shells. You can get action in the back bays on jigs and top waters for trout and redfish but won’t fill the boat. We did see a big speckled trout maybe 27inch in the surf at night.

Watch the YouTuber Bearded Brad he fishes that area and he even has a guide service where he takes people surf fishing!

When I don't have luck surf fishing, which is just about every time , I usually have luck at the Perdido Pass jetties (both sides). The west side jetty is continuous all the way out. It's a pain in the arse to walk out on the rocks, and it's difficult to manage/land fish. However, you will catch fish everytime. Spoons, plugs, and stick baits on inshore rod and reel are popular.
Another spot nearby is under the bridge on the west side. It's a popular sheepshead spot.
Something that's fun and a beer drinking event, is fishing for sharks. A local one time showed me that cut ladyfish is popular with sharks there. I helped him land an 8' shark that took over an hour to land. It does take some specialty tackle including dehooker and backup bolt cutter. I've slowly added enough tackle that I bring it and try it. I've hooked one, but I couldnt land it (pulled the hook out).

Surf fish west side jetties in corner where beach meets rocks with top water. Late evenings I have the best of luck. Trout, lady fish, etc push bait against rocks. You can see them hitting from grand point condos when surf is calm. Next to grand point is a little walking path you can travel to get to the surf there.

I was on Gulf State Pier this past week. Some tarpon were rolling and reds were busting like in the video but none in casting distance.
Some jacks were caught but for me, the real star of the show was trout up front.
Lost about a 7 pounder trying to get him up on the pier and another busted my bait pretty hard but got off as well. Managed to catch 3 in the 19 inch range.
Free lining alewives on a 12lb fluorocarbon leader and #2 octopus hook. Using about a 4 to 5 ft leader. If the really big ones don't want the 12lb leader, go to 10 or maybe even 8.
There are some legit giant trout to be caught off that pier but they're spooky as shite. One guy managed to get an 8 pounder up while I was there.

Like others have said you can get a good crash corse watching Bama beach bum, bearded Brad, and bama saltwater fishing vids. They do a ton of surf fishing and bank/jettie fishing in the area. I have caught a ton of different fish with a pomp rig using fish bites shrimp and sand flea flavor tipped with fresh dead shrimp. While that soaks I toss some spoons and jigs.
If you go beyond the surf fishing get a fishing license and also make sure you get the reef fish add on or whatever it is called. Also know the laws. The Bama green jeans will be out checking and you will get a ticket.
Bearded Brad has a vid of a guy who caught a red snapper under the pass bridge that got popped. I was there with all of them and this guy caught a legal sized red snapper but snapper season was closed that day ,(open the next day) and he didn’t have that reef fish add on. They took the fish and gave hime some ticket love. It was interesting to watch it all unfold, I was shocked with that big of a snapper right there to begin with.

You should and I do get a annual one, but in the 38 years I have been going to my one spot I have never seen anyone checking random vacationers on the beach. Not saying don't get one. Just saying the other spots mentioned get cheeked often to make sure you do get one, and get the reef fish add on. That guy with the snapper didn't know anything about the add on but did have a license. So even if he caught it the next day during the season they still would have taken and ticketed him.
