I’m planning a road trip to California and I am planning on stopping in Amarillo for an evening. I was looking at the Marriott’s Barfield, but does anyone have recs for downtown hotels. I am also looking for good local restaurants and bars.

The Embassy Suites is pretty new and very nice. I would suggest that one.
If you get a chance, check out the local AAA baseball team. I can't remember the name of them.
Food: Crush Wine Bar and Grill is very good
Tyler's BBQ is a must.
That's all I got.. I've been there a few times and have enjoyed myself every time!

Son stayed at the Embassy Suites just after it opened. Said it was really nice.

Can’t stop in Amarillo without going to the Big Texan

Don't stay on the East side of town! Make sure your car is secure with no valuables in sight. What type of food are you wanting?
Big Tex is a tourist trap. Never knew a local that went.

If you want a casual place that's of the sports bar type place. House Divided and Texas Firehouse.

If you want Mexican try Cada Vez. It's new and in the good part of town. My sister and her friends like Jorge's as they taught the entire family of kids and great service.

I ended up choosing to stay at a Springhill Suits on the westside because I realized it will be Sunday when I am there and the bars will be closed :(
I will probably just go to what-a-burger.

I eat at the Big Texas and stay on the west side of town, near 335 and I40. Pick your hotel and continue west in the morning.
At the end of the day, it's Amarillo. You're not missing a whole lot.

Big Texan. Food is good, but the atmosphere is excellent. It's a tourist trap, but a really good one.
Like the other poster said - Cadillac Ranch, bring a spray can.

Route 66 runs right thru Amarillo and has a nice group of eating options and store fronts. Kinda cool Big Tex is worth it.

For dinner, Calico Kitchen for the best chicken fried steak we've had since I lived a decade in Houston and knew the right holes in the walls kitchen. It's a local place and so good that we timed our trip back east to have dinner there a second time. Their breakfast menu looked really good, too.

There are plenty of casual dining spots and sports type places that serve on Sunday. Plus Toot'n Totem sells beer and things.

Since you're staying in that area, there is a walkons and a torchys just south of the hotel off of 335. You could at least do that rather than whata.

Stayed at the Barfield last weekend. It's the only luxury hotel in town. Very clean in a historic building. Located right around some nightlife.

Second this. It’s the best BBQ I’ve had in Amarillo. Would highly recommend.

Pack a sandwich and go to Palo Duro Canyon.
The time you spend there will be better than anything else.
