But, I need a lighter, reliable gun for my son. I don't necessarily want to do the .270 thing, I'd rather get a .308 and have it for me or him to use for a long time. Ruger American looks easy to find, but black is boring for the synthetic stock. Bergara - what model(s)? Tikka look harder to find, maybe hard to get my hands on before buying. Would love to stay 800 or under, I guess. It's fun to buy firearms (and scopes) though.

If you would expand your thinking in guns, an AR-10 is a really great gun especially with and adjustable stock. Your kid can grow up shooting one and will be able to hunt with it the rest of their life

There's alot of good things about them, especially if you're a box stand hunter. I want one. Supposedly the Smith and Wesson M&P 10 is really accurate and fairly priced.

Just be careful, AR-10 is specific to Armalite. DPMS style has far more options than the AR-10. Its a different beast than the AR-15.

I started out wanting to put together a new bolt action rifle, but ended up with a LR-308 (DPMS version of AR-10)

If you order AR-10 parts for a DPMS style gun, you'll probably end up sending them back.
