I love these threads. I shop rifles every time. I need to get out and hold it first though. I hunt deer with a 1958 Remington 740 Woodsmaster 30-06. It weighs 100 lbs, but it works and I think it is awesome to shoot with something my grandpa killed a bear with in the 60s. But, I need a lighter, reliable gun for my son. I don't necessarily want to do the .270 thing, I'd rather get a .308 and have it for me or him to use for a long time. Ruger American looks easy to find, but black is boring for the synthetic stock. Bergara - what model(s)? Tikka look harder to find, maybe hard to get my hands on before buying. Would love to stay 800 or under, I guess. It's fun to buy firearms (and scopes) though.

If you would expand your thinking in guns, an AR-10 is a really great gun especially with and adjustable stock. Your kid can grow up shooting one and will be able to hunt with it the rest of their life
