I have to work in Charleston the last two weeks of July and I’m bringing the family along. It looks like Folly beach and Sullivan’s Island are closest, with Kiawah being a littler further out, but not too far to not consider. Any opinions/big differences on these three? We will be looking to rent a house/condo during this time and a nice beach within walking distance for the kids.

If you cut off your search at Kiawah and don’t include Edisto, which is a pretty long drive, there’s four Charleston beaches.
IOP is the busiest and has the most stuff around, like restaurants and shops.
Folly is super busy too, but if you can stay on the island, it’s great for hanging out and walking the town area. Folly is hell coming and going though.
Sullivans is the closest and easiest to get to, and it has some cool parts, like Ft Moultrie.
Kiawah is the prettiest, and I think the island is the prettiest place in the state. You can walk down to the Kiawah River and maybe see the dolphins strand feeding.
They’re all great. Whichever y’all pick you’ll have a great time.

Kiawah Kiawah Kiawah. We go about twice a year.

Also Seabrook which is basically the same island but Kiawah has a much better beach.

The other beaches you mentioned are not private and a lot more crowded with public beach goers.

Folly - more blue collar
Sullivan’s/ IOP - more family
Kiawah - I hope you’re ready to drop some cash

OP, what did you end up doing?

We are planning a vacation next summer to Charleston, going to take a cruise out of there and wanting to spend 3 or so days beforehand, including a beach day. Two families, 9 people, kids aged 7-15
