Why is Cinco de Mayo a thing? I was in Cabo for my honeymoon and was pumped thinking there would be a big celebration. Nope, nothing. Bartender said that’s an American thing. I don’t understand it

Yeah it's only celebrated in Puebla. Over a battle against the french in like 1860s.
Other than that it's a date some latino unions (iirc in chicago) choose to celebrate for labor rights reasons (or some crap) back in the 70s. Along the way the beer brewers caught hold of a way to sell beer in early May, and here we are.
