Can’t you get away with partially draining and diluting high mineral levels with new water?
OP is in Arizona. AZ in general has extremely high calcium content in water. I would advise that she has Leslies test her tap water to see what it contains calcium hardness wise.
What did Leslie's report the calcium at?

even through the winter I'd check and my PH slides up. I've read it has to do with the mineral content of fresh diamondbrite. It stays within range, but it is a constant slide upward.

Whoa.
How high is your pH? You’ll definitely have to add more during a gunite pool startup, but that seems like a lot. I usually only have to add 20-30 oz at a time.

Since this is becoming a good collection of pool owners, does anybody have any skimmer recommendations or other tricks? I’ve read about skimmer socks, but not really interested in that. I’ve heard the “skim-around” sucks. I’m really just looking for something more maintenance friendly when I clean them. Reaching down into that hole can be unsettling. Any better skimmers with handles or just a handle/extension to make removing and cleaning it easier?

How often do y’all clean your salt cell? I took mine off for the first time after a year of use and it didn’t have any scale. I cleaned it with acid
I just checked mine after a year of use and it was clean as new. Didn’t need to clean it.
I stay consistent with my acid treatment, so I guess it’s paying off.

My husband bought something that looks like this. I would never empty tjhe skimmers because I hated putting my hand in there not knowing what else might be in there besides leaves

Also, a Dolphin cleaner is well worth the cost and it replaces the pool service.
The best purchase I've ever made for the pool. I bought one last year and it saves so much time and work.

Just ordered, maybe the wife and kids will empty skimmers with this

you mean like this?
My pool strainer basket is always good for some unexpected entertainment.

My wife would never get back in the pool if she looked in that skimmer
Maybe I shouldn’t ask her to dump it anymore

I have this, but for extra sketchy situations (if I know a snake is in there), I have a 2 ft. piece of chain with a hook on the end to grab the handle of the skimmer angel and pull it out.

Every four hours I add 16 ounces, until I use a gallon, then test again.
That is TERRIBLE advice. I can guarantee you are in the 6's now (BAD) What was your pH to begin with? 1 gallon of muriatic acid will lower my ph by 1, and that is 18,500 gallon pool.
Stop listening to pool store employees....they are not knowledgeable . There ONLY goal is to sell and make MONEY

i do the 'grab and pray' for mine. i tell me wife the '10 second rule' is in effect and grab the handle with my thumb and middle finger and yank quickly and set it on the stone wall. most of the time i do this before any spider has time to jump/crawl onto my hand but the night that BIG arse SUCKER was in there (above) i used channel locks

I have skimmer socks that I change every couple of weeks and I have the skim arounds along with a dolphin. The skim-arounds works well if your water level is high enough. We are practically maintenance free aside from replacing the skimmer socks every so many weeks and testing the water every two weeks. The Dolphin runs on a schedule every day. This was our first year having a pool and I was expecting a lot more maintenance, but we have been pleasantly surprised.

I started up my pool only about a month ago. And it took like a week before I had a damn (small - but who the hell cares!!) snake in my skimmer. I saw it, luckily, before I grabbed it. I used a pipe wrench to pull the basket and dumped it quickly. Then I went over to the pump to clean the strainer and there that little fricker was.

Really, I was thinking about buying a couple of these. I was watching my pool yesterday and the grass would float right on by my skimmer and not go inside.

That’s what I have. Gotta knock the spiders off of the handle and the good to go lol

What about the water guru? Anyone have any experience with it?
