To be honest I never really liked it much when I was in the army and someone said that to me. I was polite about it, but I always thought it was kinda cheesy.
I like to have fun with it. Either snapping off a sharp salute with a hearty "YOU'RE WELCOME CITIZEN" or kinda like that one episode of SpongeBob where Patrick mocks Squidward but saying "thank you for YOOUUUR service" "no thank you for YouRuUR service"
eta if you must know why:

My Dad's response to this is "Don't thank me. I was drafted."

You sound like an entitled brat unappreciative of your own dad. I was active from 82 - 88
I made $14K as an E-5
A rack the size of a coffin on a ship surrounded by dozens of other smelly sailors in coffins. I was single and paid out of pocket for my own apartment in town with no housing allowance.
I pay for insurance through my employer
That was earned, not given based on an arbitrary characteristic like gender or skin color
You don't even know what that is and you throwing it out there like some great privilege.
I feel awkward when someone thanks me for my service but I accept it with the same generosity in which it was offered.

You don't have to say it if you don't want to! But just remember what that person in uniform did for you and all Americans who enjoy a multitude of freedoms each and every day.
He/She took an oath to support & defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; and to bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and to obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over them, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Their lives are on the line every minute, hour, day, etc. that they wear the uniform. And it's all to protect all of us.
Remember, all military personnel gave some, but some gave all!

I’m a veteran, I don’t want to be thanked for my service. I actually tell folks that do “thank you for paying the taxes that funded it, I had a great time”.
I know folks feel it’s the thing to do but a lot of veterans would rather you didn’t.

Who doesn't like to be acknowledged for what they did? It's a simple gesture that makes me feel proud to have served.
Ask a Vietnam Veteran if they would have liked to be thanked when they came home...instead of cursed & spit on.

Exactly. WWII was a completely different time, where it almost seems like it was honorable and all of that jazz to actually fight for your country. It was also draft time.
Nothing that has gone on in a long time has been worth fighting for or over, and we will probably never see a draft again.

Im glad most of the veterans have said they don’t like it. So all the snowflake righties in this thread did what they do best, melt before hearing facts.
I want to thank the Union Army for my freedom. The ones before the union army supported slavery. The ones after we’re fighting for freedom of other countries.

Me I guess. No real big philosophical reason. I served because I believed it was the right thing to do, not for any benefit I could possibly get. I guess it stems from that. Also, I’m a bit of introvert.

This isn’t a big deal. I’ll tell one thank you for your service if they thank me for paying taxes.
joe_cotton: You must have cotton for brains! Everyone pays taxes and I don't think your life is on the line by doing so. You sound like an ungrateful piece of shite, so next time you encounter a veteran just tell them that you paid taxes and you think you did as much for the country as they did.
Let me know what happens.

What I hate the most is when someone says it to someone around me and I just feel super awkward like maybe I should too, but then I don't. But then I still walk away asking myself should I have said something? I never do.

What I find funny is the people that get all pissy about not being thanked for their service are the ones that sat their lazy asses at a desk and never went near a conflict of any sort. People who actually fought don’t usually care about this and just say thanks and go on about their day.
Had a buddy that was like that, he basically did nothing from what I can gather from his 7 years in and was ran out, he freakin hams up every chance he can get to play his service card for any benefit possible. Never saw a war or anything and claims PTSD and disability benefits. Dude is fine. Wife (non military) pulls the same shite with other working benefits that should go to less fortunate when both of them make decent middle class salaries.

Why do we still call it “the service” when the vast majority of those who are enlisting are doing it for their own job training, college tuition, etc

Have you served?

I'd rather you don't thank me for my service. It's unneccessary virtue signaling IMO
The best support is simply having policies in stores and gov't that support vets. No need for arse-kissing
