re: Here’s an unusual idea: Run electric trucks downhill as an alternative to dams

What about the loss of fish habitat and effects on other wildlife with reduced water in rivers?
It seems all forms of green energy have a devastating effect on nature: birds and bats killed by wind turbines, mining ravaging the earth for batteries and solar panels, dams blocking fish migration.
Is oil and gas truly better for the earth? I’ve read, if I recall correctly, that caribou and elk love pipelines. Fish congregate near oil platforms. What’s not to like? (Except for the occasional spill)

quote:FYI the study goes into a lot more detail than the linked article, of course, and it addresses some of the issues with fixed hydro in certain applications and why a more flexible system such as trucked hydro might be advantageous. Notably seasonal variability in water sources means trucked hydro can operate where fixed hydro might have a low capacity factor.

That's a college sophomore exam question (dunno whether physics, math, or engineering), not a plan for the real world.
yep. saw it posted the other day. It's so funny how riled up the OT gets over anything EV, even if it isn't a proposed thing for the real world and is just some college kids class assignment

Are you under the impression that the volume of water in a river is the same at its source as it is further downstream?

I hope they don't start their trials on the bridge in BR.

how's the truck/tank gonna get back to the top of the mountain?

Do you think those all come together at the top of a mountain, dunbass?

This still seems like a really inefficient way to generate power

It is, but I don't think the suggestion is this should be a major source of energy.

It’s just a bad design with too many moving parts that will fail and need to be replaced.

Surely, I'm not arguing that.

Again not arguing that this idea is viable, I'm just saying it has more legs than the "hur dur infinite energy" folks think it does
I've finally figured it out, you just LOVE to argue.

Did any of you even read the study? Doubtful.

Tow them uphill with a gas/diesel powered vehicle?

It will take more energy to get the truck back up the hill than it will make coming down the hill. Otherwise, these people have finally solved the dilemma of perpetuity with a truck full of water.
Not true, that was accounted for, the truck is empty going back up the mountain resulting positive net energy. While the idea seems very impractical it complies with the laws of physics.
