My front yard and a lot of my back yard is zoysia.
I've never dethatched in 13 years. I was thinking about burning the front yard this year which would do the same thing.
Weeds will grow in it but not as easily as they do in bermuda. I put out pre-emergent in the spring and fall. Rarely spray post emergent weed control.
ETA: I'm in a burb of Memphis so take with a grain of salt. We can't grow centipede or St Augustine here.
Reason I say that is the cold/dormancy may help with thatch some. Don't know.
