re: Anybody know what’s going on with Phil Mickelson?

Phil was in a dispute with the PGA Tour over certain issues he feels that the marquee players have been given the short end of the stick on.
I think he was using the Saudi Tour as leverage against the PGA Tour. Phil helped spearhead about 10-15 big names to threaten to leave for the other Tour (more like “big names who used to be top 10 players but aren’t any more”).
This was a two year process, that for reasons I can’t figure out, all blew up this week. My guess is that it was because Phil gave an interview in which he let it slip that he was bluffing, and that comment became public this week.
Phil is likely being suspended by the Tour, as Phil announced today he is taking a break from golf to refocus on what’s important. But I can’t see anyway whatsoever that Phil isn’t teeing it up at Augusta National this April as the reigning PGA Champion.
Phil has made a mess of this, we’ll see if he can bounce back. Not so much playing wise, just popularity wise with the fans and his fellow competitors on the tour.
Phil isn’t being canceled for saying anything good or bad about the Saudi’s, he’s being canceled by the golf world for almost pulling some star players to another tour that would compete with the PGA and European Tours.

Funny thing is, the stars on Tour have had 2 years to come out and pledge their allegiance to the PGA and European Tours and almost none of them have until this week.
Whatever happened this week seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back and all of the sudden everyone came out saying “I love the PGA Tour and we never think about leaving.”
Some names assumed to be leaving for the Saudi Tour until this past week:
Phil Mickelson
Dustin Johnson
Bryson Dechambeau
Justin Rose
Ian Poulter
Lee Westwood
Henrik Stenson
Jason Kokrak
There were allegedly 17-20 names ready and they were waiting to get 20 to make the announcement together.

How is the pga cancelling him?
That doesn't make sense.
If what he said never came out he wouldn't have had to "step away".
He supposedly said that to someone in private and they came out with the story.

The Masters isn't sanctioned by the PGA.
He'll be there.

Greg Norman tried to do this years ago and had a similar experience. In fact, I'm pretty sure Norman is associated with this effort as well. I don't know the details of the dispute, but over the years there have been several business minded players who have taken issue with the money split between the players and the tour.
