[BBC News] Transatlantic sanctions task force to be launched

quote:

The new financial measures just announced by the EU, US, UK, France, Germany and others targeting Russia will be complemented by a transatlantic task force, according to the joint statement.

That effort "will ensure the effective implementation of our financial sanctions" by identifying and freezing the assets of sanctioned individuals and organisations, they say.

The group says it will also work with other governments to "deny these individuals the ability to hide their assets in jurisdictions across the world".

Western countries have already imposed sanctions on several major Russian institutions, officials and elites, including President Vladimir Putin himself.

"We stand with the Ukrainian people in this dark hour," the statement concludes.

I fricking love Ukraine. Give them every bit of support (except boots on the ground) they need because they have shown themselves worthy.

They think that big red glow outside Kyiv is due to Russia hitting an Oil depot.

Report form a Kyiv news outlet that the Kyiv children's cancer hospital was hit. Be on the lookout for any verification of that.

In an interview with CNN this afternoon, Poroshenko said that a children’s hospital was hit and that one child had died. Take that for what it’s worth.

You know it’s totally possible for someone to think China’s a threat while also thinking you’re crazy right? You’re crazy because of how you convey message and to what extent the messages go to.

Yeah. It makes the Ruble worthless. While I don’t think he’ll nuke us over it, he’d consider it slightly.

If they nuke Washington and kill everyone with the codes and then China launches a shite ton of nukes at us before we can even react, what happens? The space nuke, while equally as destructive as a conventional nuke, means they don’t know a nuclear strike is coming. That’s a big difference than us having a few minutes

There is ample redundancy in the system. The codes won't be wiped out in a surprise attack. But fun fact, SLBMs don't even need the codes. They can launch upon concurrence of the Captain and XO.

Dude people might not be so all over you if you weren’t so cryptic. “Taiwan is the largest manufacturer of semiconductor chips and it would bad if China took it over and cut that off from their enemies” is much less inflammatory and gets to the point.

Looks like Russia has decided against preserving as much of the cities inside Ukraine as possible.

Depending on how widespread the shelling actually is this would be the first indication that Russia is indeed having a harder time by far than they expected. By that I mean incontrovertible proof vs all the questionable reports from both sides. You don't break something you want to keep if you don't have to.

And that’s probably not good for the Ukrainians, right?

Uh. JFK would probably disagree if he could.

Ok kind of have me there, but I meant a singular civilian. A singular civilian may have pulled the trigger, but he did not act alone and I’ll never be convinced elected and unelected members of govt weren’t involved. Anyway, don’t want to turn the thread into a real conspiracy thread. I will concede you got me on Kennedy in a way.

What new communism truly is is fascism

Which is just fascism. Words mean things, and communism implies something very specific, as does fascism. I don’t think they would meet the standards of fascism put forth by Payne, who suggested that one component of fascism was the fascist negations, which are ‘anti-communism, anti-liberalism, and anti-conservatism.’ But fascism has always been the buffet line of political ideologies, though the supremacy of the state as well as having expansionist aims seem to be common themes that connect the Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and German versions. Given the general trend of China and Vietnam, both states who adopted ‘liberal’ economic proposals, they still do pay lip service to communist ideology, with the Vietnamese describing and justifying their reforms as being part of a transition to a more fully realized communist state.

Russia is more clearly a fascist state, especially in that there are very few institutions that exist around Putin. I’ve heard them described as ‘gangster capitalists’ but I think ‘gangsterism’ is a good enough term to describe Putin’s looting of the state. But we don’t even have to go that far to imagine why the Ukrainians don’t want to be part of any Russian designs, just that simply the country and people regard themselves as distinct and want a nation. I don’t think the memory of communism is playing a role in their resistance.
