I love the episode where he and Venus are doing the drinking test with the state trooper. Venus' reactions slow with more drinking - Johnny's gets better

Last fall flipping through the channels I saw him playing a doctor on Laverne & Shirley and ER at the same time.

As a kid in the late 70s/early 80s, I often confused Hessman with Martin Mull.

Another of those rare actors that was in quite a few bad shows or movies but never gave a bad performance, which is the mark of a true professional. When he had good material to work with he was amazingly funny and talented.

In one case I think it was intentional. Mull and Hessman played semi-similar DJ characters in FM and WKRP. When CBS aired the first WKRP promos (while FM was still in theaters), Hessman was just shown jumping around, so you couldn’t see him clearly. I thought they’d gotten Mull to reprise his FM role.

I remember HH standing out as sort of a Fever character years earlier in "Billy Jack".

lol. YouTube auto-played Andy meeting Johnny for the first time. LINK

He was possibly the first gay recurring character in American TV. “Mr. Plager” was one of Bob Hartley’s (Bob Newhart) regular patients.

He was in an episode of Rockford as a citizen against development of natural lands.
KRP was one of the best sitcoms during its time.

The thing about Howard Hessemman I'll always remember is watching The Andy Griffith Show in the '80s and and learning HH had been in 2 of the last season's episodes:

In the one where Goober goes to the auto show and meets up w/an old friend who's now doing very well in business (one of the best color episodes -- the ending is a classic)

HH later appeared in one of the very last TAGS episodes, where Ken Berry is running for council. I'm surprised they put him on -- he'd already gone hippie by this point.

And the CINCINNATI Bengals are now in the Super Bowl.

Johnny Fever has to be stoked for that.
