Even after so much fear, death, and misery, U.S. soldiers gathered in the ruins of the Cologne Cathedral to pray and hear Mass (March 1945).

My childhood parish priest had been a chaplain on the front in Europe. The most blunt priest I ever met. The previous pastor had spent money like crazy while sucking up to those with more substance in that small town. Fr Gilbert read the monthly accounting once a month as part of the sermon with the tone of "You asked for all this, now fricking pay for it."
