Eastbound aircraft travel at an odd flight level, 39k feet, 37k feet, etc.

Westbound travel at an even level 38k feet, 36k feet, etc. so there isn’t any “tailgating”

Most commercial aircraft are RVSM certified where they can fly 1000 ft apart. So OP isn’t wrong.
