You have a smart wife. Elevation change is going to affect your mpg. Speed is the only thing affecting your travel time. "Light traffic" could mean anything.

Did you look at the maps he posted? He was travelling from North Florida to North Alabama...

It has to do with the Coriolis Effect. It's the same reason hurricanes spin.
