re: Opting out for fear of injury is a weak excuse.

I understand this, but I am saying that at this point we should not even have bowl games anymore. Obviously the bowls are wanting to keep that money so they do not wish nor plan on getting rid of them.

Let's say you are a top 5 pick. You get hurt and fall to ten. You just lost 12 mill.
And at the same time, if the guy decides to play, and "balls out", he can up his stock, and make even more money, while obtaining more valuable game experience.

Unless there's $$$$$ involved.
Then it becomes a bizness decision
just like the coaches.

I’m guessing it’s only a matter of time before high school seniors start opting out as well

Or at least be consistent and also don't ride in cars, engage in any other athletic activities or do anything else where there's a reasonable chance of injury.

So it's absolutely impossible for a guy to move from #4 to #2? Crazy....

I find it amazing the amount of posters who thing one more game could increase a player's stock value.

One game absolutely can. It's this little thing called "exposure." Jamarcus Russell played in a "meaningless" bowl game against Notre Dame that was nationally televised, and became the talk of the town among NFL draft analysts, and eventually became the number one pick.

Unfortunately, freak accidents happen too.
quote:
When the Baltimore Ravens drafted former University of Texas outside linebacker Sergio Kindle in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft, he was expected to join Terrell Suggs as the next elite pass rusher in Baltimore.
However, things have been different. Much, much different.
At Texas, Kindle was a star for the Big 12 champion Longhorns. In the 2010 BCS National Championship, Kindle shined, recording six tackles and 2.5 sacks in a loss to Alabama. He appeared set to be one of the next top-tier pass-rushers in the NFL.
But then he came to Baltimore.
The first low spot of Kindle's career in Baltimore came on July 25, 2010, when he fell down stairs at a home in Austin, Texas.
quote:
Due to the head injury, Kindle missed the entire 2010 season.
But heading into the 2011 season, Kindle appeared healthy and ready to contribute to the team. However, that certainly did not happen. Last season, Kindle wasn't even active for a game until the fourth week of the season.
He went on to be activated for just one more game, failing to record a single tackle.
After two years in the NFL, the second-round pick has failed to record a single tackle and has only been active for two games. Just think about that.
Yes, Kindle's injury occurred a few months after the draft but it basically ended his career before it ever got started. We all know the story of Myles Brennan's freak accident.

Russell was already on team’s radars prior to that Sugar Bowl & was viewed as a top 5 pick. It also helped that Al Davis was owner/GM of the Raiders who was always infatuated with the deep ball which lead to his infatuation with Russell despite Lane Kiffin not wanting to draft him at all.
quote:
The Stage is Set
Jamarcus Russell was selected 1st in the NFL Draft of 2007. Al Davis believed that he had found the Franchise Quarterback that would lead the Raiders back to their Commitment to Excellence. After staging one of the longest holdouts in NFL history (he didn’t sign until the first week of the season), Russell signed a six year contract worth $68 million, with over $30 million guaranteed. Al Davis is ecstatic.
The Awakening
Prior to the draft, Lane Kiffin made it clear to Al Davis that he didn’t want to draft Russell. He didn’t think he was the best player in the draft and felt that Russell wouldn’t be able to help the Raiders for years to come because he was so “raw”. In a letter, Davis informed Kiffin: “I do realize that you did not want us to draft Jamarcus Russell. He is a great player. Get over it and coach this team on the field, that is what you were hired to do. We can win with this team,” Kiffin disagreed and sat Russell for as long as he could. As we all know, this was a major contributor to the firing of Kiffin. Davis wanted Russell to play and he was reinserted during 3 of the last 4 games of the 2007 season. His performance was terrible. Davis witnesses the multitude of interceptions, fumbles and unwarranted sacks.
What does increase player's stock value are good/great performances at the NFL Combine along with solid individual interviews while there as well. Also, good/great Pro Days & private workouts for individual NFL organizations. You wanna know what are actual stock killers? Injuries, bad medical exams, drug usage & examples poor character.
