Is it even possible for all 13 teams to play 8 conference games? More specifically, is it possible for 7 west teams to play 6 division games and 2 against the East and for all East teams to play 5 division games and 3 against the West?

Does the math work out on that?

ETA: I don't want this thread to get into whether people like or dislike a temporary 13-team conference or a thread about expanding to 14 or 16... I merely want to know if the actual math can work for a 13-team conference where all 13 teams play exactly 8 conference games and all division teams play the same # of division games as their division peers.

Yes, no.

Math works out easiest if each team has 4 permanent opponents. Then you play half of the remaining 8 one year and the other half the next.

No. East and West have to play the same number of games between each other. With an 8 game sched, the east would play 5 div and 3 x-conf for 18 x-conf games. The west has to match that so they can't play a full div slate. The West would have 3 teams play 6-2 and the 4 teams play 5-3 for a total of 18 x conf.

What if a team skates through the season one year w/o having to play Bama, LSU, and USC?

I suppose that's what the c'ship game is for, but remember...

Finding the top two will be hard to do without divisions.

What if LSU is undefeated, but Bama and USC both have one loss, but not to each other.

Are you gonnna let BCS rankings determine that like the Big 12 had to with Tex, TTech and OU??

I am definitely not in favor of this. Even if it was only temporary.

That happens anyways with divisions. Some teams in the west (or east) get tougher draws in the opposite division.

I understand what you are saying as no system is perfect. Not exactly sure how tiebreakers would work.

The reason I say eliminate the divisions is so that you could assign every team two permanent rivalry games and you would play teams more often than a divisional setup.

Although, someone told me the ncaa requires divisions to have a champ game, so it may not be possible.
