For a couple of weeks I have reported on West Virginia's fight to be accepted as a member of the Southeastern Conference. My source is a individual who has well-placed contacts inside the WVU athletic department, as well as, substantial boosters. While we will not know how accurate he is until an announcement is actually made, I know first hand that his reports (published by LHB) have ruffled feathers (or coonskin caps) inside the WVU heirarchy and among big-money boosters in Morgantown. Here is his lastest (via email):

Chatter began to build late Friday afternoon and gained steam after the Big East meeting on Sunday that West Virginia University would soon leave the Big East and join the SEC.

Sources close to the Mountaineer program confirmed that WVU’s plan to compete in SEC athletics was approved by the SEC’s league office clearing the way for the Mountaineers to formally submit an application for membership.

The only remaining hurdle was quietly addressed in the Big East meeting on Sunday as the 14 remaining Big East schools voted to waive the required 27 month notification and allow Pittsburgh and Syracuse to participate in the ACC in 2012. The vote established a precedent that would allow the Mountaineers to compete in the SEC next year.

According to the same sources the SEC informed WVU midweek that the Mountaineers would be offered the 14th spot in the conference.

Widespread speculation that the Mountaineers would withdraw from the Big East on Sunday proved to be untrue but WVU officials resisted attempts from other Big East members and commissioner John Marinatto to raise the exit fee for the league.

WVU sources have no opinion on the growing national sentiment that Missouri would be the SEC’s choice over WVU. The Missouri Board of Curators reportedly will meet on Tuesday to discuss conference affiliation and it was widely assumed the Board would approve Missouri’s move to the SEC.

With the confidence within the Mountaineer program about SEC membership and the equally confident stance of Missouri regarding membership in the SEC one Mountaineer booster speculated that the SEC was intent of expanding to 16.

“The only think that makes sense is if both WVU and Missouri are invited to join the SEC.” he said.

According to the Mountaineer booster the SEC has told WVU the league plans to expand to 16 if Missouri decides to join the league.

WVU and Texas A&M would begin SEC play in 2012 . Missouri and the final 16th addition to the league would begin play in 2013.

The booster, who also has close ties to the Virginia Tech program, asserts that Virginia Tech was approached by the SEC to be part of a 16 team league but they (SEC) were rebuffed.

“Tech has complex political ties to the University of Virginia that would make it difficult for the Hokies to leave the ACC.”

He went on to say that Frank Beamer was vehemently opposed to switching conferences.

The Mountaineers have always been considered a long shot for SEC membership due to their small media market size. Apparently WVU athletic director Oliver Luck successfully pitched WVU’s national appeal and the growing population in West Virginia’s eastern panhandle that is part of the Washington D.C. market.

The Mountaineers also perform strongly in the Pittsburgh market.

The SEC reportedly liked WVU’s commitment to winning national championships in both football and basketball

Some major up in here.

I know it is full of crap because Missouri would not be able to wait until 2013 to move to the SEC. In order to play in the Big 12 next year, they have to sign a 6 year golden handcuff agreement on their Tier 3 rights to the Big 12 for 6 six years. This entire article is comprimised.

IMO (partially based on what I've seen on our boards).....neither of these 2 is coming. The SEC rolls with 13 for at least a year, and has their eyes on an ACC team.

Brace For Disappointment

Perhaps it is just a coincidence, but Tuesday, October 4th is the seventh anniversary of Brady Deaton’s debut as Chancellor of the University of Missouri. It is also the date on which Deaton must make the most important decision of his seven years as Chancellor. Tomorrow Deaton will tell the Missouri Board of Curators whether the Tigers should remain proud members of the Big 12, or become the newest member of the Southeastern Conference.

Brace for Disappointment

Missouri will stay in the Big 12 Conference because staying in the Big 12 Conference is the easy thing to do. Staying in the Big 12 Conference is the comfortable thing to do. Staying in the Big 12 Conference allows Chancellor Deaton to avoid looking like the bad guy who kicked an already down Big 12. Staying in the Big 12 Conference allows Chancellor Deaton to bask in the warm glow of being the man who gave stability to a fracturing Big 12 Conference.

From the link you posted. This guy knows nothing. Why should we care about his opinion?

Virginia Tech has only been in the ACC since it went to two divisions. It was in the Big East before that. So those complex ties with UVA smells like total bullshite to me.

You realize those complex ties are the reason Virginia Tech got in the ACC instead of Syracuse in 2005, right?

The move to the ACC was a drama that affected many schools and conferences. Looking to expand, the ACC first courted Miami, Syracuse, and Boston College. But Virginia politicians and U.Va.'s President John Casteen and Athletic Director Craig Littlepage supported Virginia Tech, leading to Tech's invitation to join, along with Miami.

"This has been an outstanding rivalry in the past," says Athletic Director Jim Weaver, "but now it has more on the line than just the Commonwealth Cup. Every time we compete against the University of Virginia, the outcome will have an impact on the Atlantic Coast Conference standings in the respective sport. Thus the rivalry is enhanced as a result of Tech's membership in the ACC."

It's that very membership for which Tech owes much thanks to U.Va. And it looks as if the rivalry just got a lot more complicated--and enticing.

You should be pretty sure about the politic ties between UVA and VT.

as I've said before, I can deal with wvu if we goto 16. At 14, we better plan on bringing in some big names if we goto 16.

overall not a good choice from a money side of things.
