14 or 16 teams

Which would you rather?

14 > 16 , simple math

Depends. If you are only going to have 2 div, then 14. If you are able to have 4 div and the extra playoff game, then 16. You can actually create a better sense of belonging to the whole because you can rotate playing the whole conference a little quicker (have to get rid of the permanent foe though).

If expansion is inevitable then definitely 14. I don`t think people realize just big a clusterf### a 16 team will create.

Let's say 2 or 1 mega division

12. Everyone is all giddy over expansion because it is "new" and "interesting" with no regard to how it will actually change the product.
9 Conference games is going to do several things: make it harder to see an undefeated or one less champion, lesson the occurance of exciting OOC matchups, and create an "unfairity" each year between 4 and 5 home conference games.
You will play a lower percentage of teams in your conference, and depending on the alignment, could lose some of the league's best rivalries.
The fan shouldn't be worrying about TV dollars or anything else. The 12 team-8 games and a championship format has done wonders for the league and allowed it to become the best in the country. There is no possible reason to try to mess it up. Also, I worry about other conferences following suit and a playoff to follow that would further diminish the importance of the regular season, which as is, is the best in sports.

14 is fine with me.
I think we are going for 14 now with designs on eventually getting to 16 in a few years.

14, but I don't like the mega division idea at all. Too many teams and too much opportunity to miss good teams. The divisions expand hope when one sucks, like 2001 LSU or SC last year.

I agree and I just don't see how 4 divisions would work

I think if this expansion happens, the SEC needs to do away with the permanent opponent from the opposite division. That way we can have 8 conference games as we do now with 2 rotating games against the other division.

If you're only going to play 2/7 teams in the other division, what's the point of even being in the same conference? 12 is both the optimal and maximum number; any bigger and it is essentially 2 separate conferences.

old 16 team WAC says sure try out a 16 team conference, right after it gets done laughing it arse off
Posted on 8/13/11 at 7:34 pm to TheIrishFro
How did they format that?

So, playing 3/7 makes it way better? And, the point of being in the same conference is to have strong schools who can generate revenue for each of the schools to share.

No, I don't think either is a good number and that's part of why I'm against any expansion. And as to generating revenue, I obviously understand that these moves are primarily money-related. But I'm a fan; I don't care about money past the point that it makes our schools able to pay top coaches and fund top facilities, which we are already able to do.
