Alabama, LSU, Florida, Florida St, Texas, USC, Slowhio, Notre Dame,
Sure I have left one or two out, but think those are the top with Oklahoma, Michigan, Oregon, Miami types right behind.
I agree with that list of premier programs. But, just because you have a premier program doesn't guarantee you can go hire any coach you want; or, that a coach with prior success will do well at one of those programs. When Notre Dame hired Brian Kelly, I was fairly certain that he was going to restore that football team to a superpower. After playing for a national championship in 2012, the Fighting Irish finished at 7-5 this year. Look at Rich Rod. He was one upset away from playing for a national championship at West Virginia. He then goes to Michigan and gets run out in three years. He landed at Arizona and he is playing for a conference title in his third year.
I don't know that there is a "best position" to hire a new coach unless a Nick Saban or Urban Myer tells a school he wants to coach there and would accept an offer if extended. Otherwise, hiring just about any other coach seems to me like a gamble.

Id think LSU offering 5 to 6 million would open up alot of options. Either way i'm good with his decision. Does Michigan have to pay LSU if they take the coach? is their a buyout?

I don't want Miles fired, but i think we could get a good coach to replace him for sure.
The good thing about LSU is that its the only big name school in a state ripe for recruiting. That's a big bonus. Florida is great but it has FSU and Miami to contend with for all instate recruits.

I agree, which is why I'm confused as to why LSU fans keep bringing up stupid scenarios where you give the head coaching gig to Cam Cameron, Frank Wilson or Chavis. Really? You have one of the better jobs in the country in the middle of a fertile recruiting footprint and you're going to simply promote a coordinator or position coach? That's small time nonsense.

I was one of those ppl...I'm definitely not stupid but you looking at things through purple lens.
I, like you, would want the best coach to come in and run the program. When Saban left we got Les Miles. Now although Les turned out to be great I guarantee you if this board would have been open back then no one would be screaming his name...and the alternative for all we know (and Saban's suggestion) was Houston Nutt. Yes, Houston Nutt. None of the superstar coaches in other jobs they are successful in came beating down LSU door then and they wont now when you are dealing with the gauntlet that is the SEC West. LSU has the same attributes now they did back then: competitive facilities within that playing era and strong recruiting grounds.
Each school needs different coaches. What works at UF may not work at LSU. And vice versa. Dynamics are different. And I think Frank Wilson would work...

I disagree. Michigan waiting so long to fire the current coach might put LSU in the same position we were in when Nick left. You'll recall the two best available coaches out there, Meyer and Spurrier, were already taken. This year several elite programs have already been looking for a new coach for weeks. I fear there will be slim pickens if this drags out too long.
