Would it be legal to wait until dead period is over to name DC?

I don't even understand the premise.

Are you suggesting a DC would be identified but not "hired" and that guy would be contacting the recruits because he is NOT actually a coach, yet?

There can be zero upside to that for either the school or the coach. What coach worth being the DC would begin duties without a signed contract?

And, what would he say, "I'm not a coach at LSU...but, we want you to come to LSU so I can coach you"??

Just an odd premise all around

Isn't there some kind of provision that allows us more visits (or something) when we are down one staff member? Thought I heard something about that.

Also, I seem to remember Meyer pulling something when he was first hired at OSU but Fickell was still HC for the bowl game.

Basically what your asking is would a school wait to sign the dotted line with a coach who they are hiring so that said coach could go recruit for them in the dead period because he is not officially a coach yet? And my answer would be that a school would probably not risk doing that.

I think he means legal in terms of the NCAA.

I think you knew that, though.

If the staff is down one coach the HC can make up the difference with more direct contact with recruits. That is why you see LSU announce new Asst Coaches at the recruiting bash

yep. this has happened 3-5 times since Les has been our coach. And the scenario has played out almost identically every single time. People overreact and freak out that we don't name a coach immediately. And, then Les names a coach after National Signing Day. Has Les every named a new coaching hire prior to Signing Day?

Pointless. As pointed out fifty times, the dead period does not limit contact by phone, just face to face meetings. You basically have to kill a hooker to get the NCAA's attention these days, but this would certainly do it.

Actually sounds like the kind of shite Orgeron would pull. Highly unethical but very effective
