1) Herman has had success everywhere he has gone
He has broken countless offensive records at every program he has taken over.

2) He has proven that he can get a lot out of a little
He has had tremendous success at small programs like Rice as an OC, and now Houston as a head coach.

He has outsmarted programs with far more talent such as Oklahoma state which he helped beat in the championship when he was OC at Iowa state (this is what got Alabama into the championship in 2011). He has also beaten countless big programs at UH (Florida State, Oklahoma, Louisville x2)

3) He has beaten Saben

This is a big one.
While he was just the OC at OSU when they beat bamma, the success his offensive schemes had against Nick Saban's defense was a huge part for why they won that game, and they did so with a third string quarterback!

4) His record at Houston is 22-3
While people argue that some smaller teams have beat him, (Connecticut, or SMU), just about any great coach has lost games that they shouldn't have lost at some point in their career.
(Saban to UAB his first year at LSU, or LA Monroe his first year at Alabama)

But looking at his overall record, 22-3 is incredibly consistent, and while people argue that it is because he plays in a weaker conference will lesser talent, it is not like he has superior talent at Houston either.

5) He is a great recruiter
He has an eye for talent, and has been able to close the deal on big time recruits.

6) His team plays motivated
Just looking at Houston in all their games, players are usually involved throughout the whole game and play with an attitude. This is something that LSU missed under Les Miles, and something that CEO has been able to do well, and it makes a huge difference!

7) He is a great QB coach.
Look at what he has done everywhere he has gone he has coached up mediocre QB talent to play to their fullest potential. At OSU he changed the offense 3 times during the season to adjust to a new qb. He is an offensive genius!

8) He is young and ambitious
Here is his biggest upside over Jimbo.
He is much younger, and wants to win a championship bad. I'm sure he realizes that LSU has the talent to get him their if he can just get past Saban.

9) He would likely keep Aranda
Given his past ties with Dave Aranda, he would likely try to keep him here as long as possible, and if the two get along really well he could be the reason for Aranda to want to stay an extra year or two.

10) Texas may not get him.
People automatically assume that he is gone to Texas, but he might not even be Texas's top target, and I'll give several reasons why.

-Texas tried out a hot new name in coaching in Charlie Strong last time around and it didn't work out well. This time around they may be looking for a bigger name that has more skins on the wall, more experience, and that has/is already coached and proven themselves at a big time program.

-Names like Dabo or Fisher are good candidates for this, and if other programs force Texas to pay more than they want to for Herman, they may decide that they could get a more experienced coach for the same amount.

-Texas is a very big clunky program booster wise, and if they cannot get their act together in time to make a big push for Herman, another program like LSU/Oregon could outmaneuver Texas by making a tempting offer quick.

So just my thoughts on this whole coaching search.
Obviously I am not saying that Jimbo/other options are bad but that we should prioritize Herman for the reasons stated above.

He has only taken over Houston.

Herman would be awesome. Fisher would be awesome. I have a creeping fear we'll end up with Fedora or Coach schmO and an imaginary OC. Do your job, Alleva! Damn it.

He doesn't strike me as the kind of person to jump on an offer without hearing what everyone has on the table. That could be why there is so little information on him, he could be waiting for everyone to make an offer before he decides.

He just lost to Navy and got blown out by Chad Morris.

Why not go for Jimbo who could recruit even better and has proven quarterback development skills?

Because jimbo has built a mid tier ACC team with what used to be the flagship of the ACC. Herman has taken mice and beaten men.

There it is. Should we list every disappointing loss for Jimbo and O too?

I hear you and I like Herman but you are stretching things just a bit. Countless wins? He has only beaten the big programs (which UL isn't one) you listed period that is pretty damn countable. He's done some good things but he hasn't been the head guy at a place like LSU yet. That in itself will give programs like LSU and Texas reason to think about it.

Because this hire is about BEATING ALABAMA. Do you think Jimbos offensive scheme will beat Alabama? I do not. Therefore I want the guy that is a "wildcard" not only to us. But to Bama...every fricking year!

Right. saban lost to UAB & ULM. Jimbo has put up a few stinkers at Fla St. The "perfect" coach just isn't out there. Period.

Herman is the kind of guy that will unquestionably learn from his mistakes. Having those hiccups behind him can only help him in his next endeavor.
