Aside from you thinking it’s a woke hire and not a splash hire, what about him, his past, performance, or record don’t you like? Because that’s what matters.

I don’t have anything against him, that’s just an uninspiring choice

He doesn't have much of a record to speak of. Aside from one good half season at Michigan State what has he really done?

Two of his many stints at DC were not good at all.

He was not good in his first year as a HC and then inexplicably got hired to a P5 job after that, and had a really bad first year at MSU.

This year he is 7-0 but not a single team they have played so far has a winning record.

It just doesn't scream "Top 5 Job Hire"

He's a guy that Arkansas or something tries to steal away.

He's not nearly as qualified as other options. If he were white he wouldn't even be considered.

All I will say is Willie Taggart was an Affirmative Action hire.

Don't hire someone just to virtue signal.

Yeah, I’d prefer someone with more HC success. Aranda is the exception, but we’re all pretty familiar with what he brings to the table.

Mel Tucker seems like a strong candidate. He has spent time in the SEC, and been a successful recruiter, but all has been done as an assistant. He has only been a HC for two and a half years. Last year Mich St. was not great in his first year. This year they have started out well, but their toughest test to date is arguably Miami. The rest of the season they have Michigan, Purdue, Ohio St, and Penn St, so still a lot of season left there. My argument is that there is not enough evidence that he is a successful head coach yet. If we are going for the "splash hire" I would think we are talking about people with proven records of success as a head coach in a power 5 conference.

The real answer is people don't like being dictated to. No one cares that Franklin is black. Tucker would seem forced. (and I like Tucker)

Correct and its not exactly glowing.

Its not awful but there's nothing on his resume that qualifies him for this job at this stage in his career. I don't think he brings anything to the table a number of coaches don't in a given coaching hunt. Defensive guy, shy on HC experience.

Do I hate him? No. But there's no reason he should be among the first 5 names mentioned.

I don’t think Tucker would be a horrible hire, but it certainly doesn’t make sense as a top 3 unless there’s something we don’t know. Who knows, he could come here and win 5 nattys lol... but looking at it from a decision making perspective I don’t see how you could have him higher than Napier.

I have nothing against him

Good Coach, just haven’t seen enough as a HC to warrant the LSU job.

It’s really that simple.

I dgaf about “splash” hire! I want a proven solid coach.

Most might not like it, but Mark Stoops fits that criteria. Not “big name / splash”, but is a solid coach and built a good program at Kentucky.

So winning 3 of 4 (ostensibly defeating Franklin) would make you OK with the hire?

I would argue that if the guys wins all or most of those games, it improves his resume for sure, how much is still debatable given the fact that he is new to the head coaching ranks.
My point was that a lot of people are high on him right now because Mich St is undefeated, but in reality the schedule set up extremely well for them to be undefeated at this point, and the rest of the season will determine if they are legitimate or not in my opinion.
I have maintained a stance that there are tiers to who I would be making a play for, with the top tier being coaches with proven success at other programs with (but not limited to) a National Championship or playoff experience. That seems to be the clear cut goal from here if you cut loose a guy with those credentials. Your next tier you go for the up and comers with high potential based on current success. I would say he falls squarely in this category, outside of a top 3-5 list, along with guys like Fickel, Napier, and Aranda.

There’s no question M Stoops should be ahead of Mel Tucker on “the list”
