They kept Charlie Weis after a 3-9 season when his biggest accomplishment was almost beating USC in 2005.
Kelly has never won less than 8 games. He will be back next year. Even if they go 4-8.

David Shaw should be their guy.
ND and Stanford recruit the same type of kids. But I think ND will be more flexible on admissions.
ND administration probably supports the football program better than Stanford.

I think Stanford to ND would be a step up for some people, but not Shaw, given his ties there and California kid and all that. Doubt ND would be more flexible on admission. And lifestyle is way better in Palo Alto. Bottom line, I don't see Shaw leaving for another college job, but definitely pros.

They tried hiring a Stanford coach before. Shaw is an alum of Stanford. He will not leave for any college job.

That was Weis' 3rd year though. Coaches rarely get fired anywhere before 4 years. Notre Dame takes this a year longer and has a 5 year rule.
Plus ND's 3-9 season was somewhat blamed (not completely unjustifiably) on Ty Willingham's awful recruiting. Urban Meyer chose UF over ND in part because the 2007 season was destined to be a disaster regardless of who was head coach. That year was pretty much a ticking time bomb for anybody paying attention. Not that that excuses 3-9.

Still. I can't see them firing Kelly for one bad season. He inherited a mess. And has won 8 or more for six consecutive seasons. Still possible he gets to 6-6 or 7-5.

He's had exactly 8 wins 3 times and 9 wins once. He's only won 10 or more games twice.
I could at least see your point if he had only gone 8-5 once and every other season was 10-3 or better.

Are they going to lower the entrance standards like they did for Holtz?

He may see the writing on the wall and leave, but I can't believe he will be fired.
It's not exactly a great year to be hiring when LSU is open, and Texas and USC may be open.

Chip Kelly will be the coach at USC or Notre Dame

If Weis can survive as long as he did then Kelly doesn't have anything to worry about THIS year.
Plus there's a ton of big jobs open this season and I doubt ND wants to compete with all of that.
