Before Urban Meyer took the head coaching job at Bowling Green he contacted Lloyd Carr and asked to joing the staff at Michigan. Carr said no, he likes his friends as asst.'s which is why they are so bad none has gone on to become a head coach. Urban Meyer called Bill Martin before taking the Utah job and proposed joining the Mich staff as Asst. Head Coach/OC and he would wait until Lloyd retired (be the heir apparent in waiting). Lloyd again said NO, Deboard is his close friend and he would not let him go or demote him. So Meyer went to Utah.

Why he didn't take the ND job should be self-evident. That program has no hope of reaching the NC game. Ever!!

Meyer is a guy who, while an Ohioian, was a big Bo Schembechler fan growing up and loved the UofMich. Maybe he wouldn't come here, maybe he would. I think Michigan would like to know that answer and will make the call to see if there is interest!

And today Urban Meyer gets a call from Michigan looks at the caller ID and say why is that BITCH calling me now.. And walks away.

ZERO chance at him.. Give it up. Florida is a much better program to be at right now. He turned Notre Dame down FOR Florida. To say he wanted to coach there when he was a little man on the totem poll is a reason he would leave a power house program is laughable. Same for sugesting Stoops would leave Oklahoma.

Lloyd has no say in the hire. He is a consultant to the advisory committee. He is currently vetting the candidates that the committee has roughed out. Lloyd has contacted GVSU and CMU about Brian Kelley. And, OSU about Les Miles.

Lloyd also already has a job as the Asst. Athletic Director, although many feel that his illness (suspected, not confirmed) will make that an honorary position. Bo, despite many qualms about Lloyd's handling of the program never once interfered, ever! If Lloyd came to him then he would engage (by Bo's account that only happened twice in 12 years), but never used his status to run the program behind the scenes (and there were some well docuemented tirades by Bo over Lloyd's coaching, but always in private to Bo's friends). Lloyd, for his many faults, is for the UofM first and would stand aside and let the next guy have his run! No backseat driving, the Univesity would not tolerate it from him, he is not the icon here that Bo was.

The Advisory Committee met for the first time today, so how this is alrady a decided affair is just fandom gone wild. And the Kirk Ferentz thing is not even on the table, although I am sure that the committee will want to look at him. But the University is not likely to look at other BT Head Coaches, it is not their style.

I didn't say he would leave, all I said is that there is reason in his past for Mich to call. He can say NO!

And what koolaide is anyone drinking to think that the ND job is nirvana. Top coaches are avoiding that place like the plague, because winning there in now almost impossible on a consistent basis, let alone a run at the NC.

Hmmm Weis was a top coach (no matter what you think of him today at the time he was DEFINTLY a top coach) and there hasnt been a search since so what you are saying is well dumb. Winning at ND is impossible.. Hmmmm some could say that about the state of Michigan football.

What was the record of each team going into the BIG Michigan/Notre Dame game again?

Good points, but Weis has no track record as a head coach, and NE's success proves it is Belechik and that system and culture, not the asst. coaches. Do you think the ND nation is happy about that hire? This I think is Weis' third season, so his soph class should have been on the field. And folks readily indicate that TY left the cupboard well stocked. And I don't recall any big de-commitments when Weis took the job. Weis chased his only experienced QB out of town after he won a game. How good were ND's kids? How well would you say they were coached? Were they ready for primetime in S. Bend?

Yeah, we were bad, but out coach didn't want to even be here and the result was....38-0! Which program was more pathetic, the $10 million man's or the sadsack UofM losers. At least we tried to win the game.

And assuming that nothing at all takes place on the coaching search front without "advisory committee" involvement is naivete gone wild.

As for Michigan always moving at a "glacial pace", it sure didn't take Bo long to can Bill Frieder once he took the Az St. job, did it?

AGAIN..

Weis was a BIG coach that everyone wanted.. Notre Dame got him. You cannot look three years later and say he isnt now and none of the big names wanted to have anything to do with Notre Dame. ND really only went after two guys and got one of them. One of those big names 3 years ago was Weis. Who incase you forgot went to 2 straight BCS games before this season.

I only recall Wies and Meyer really talked about for the ND job.. What so called big names turned them down???

Actually nothing has taken place yet. Bill Martin is not leading this effort and they will take their time.

But, I'll play along... they all lied and have been secretly plotting how to screw up LSU and every other major program's season and bowl games since last Jan when Carr tried to retire the first time. The cabal meets in the bowels of Crisler arena daily going over secret files and FBI reports to know where and how to continue messing with LSU and Iowa and Cincinnati and Oklahoma and the Oakland Raiders and anyone else that looks promising.

Weis was an NFL assistant not a wunderkind. He was a hot name, but still had no track record to measure. And you have no idea who ND contacted or considered, who they rejected and who rejected them. And if it was such a great job, why did Urban Meyer turn it down? And why did a premier program like Fla. even look at the Utah coach when they could have had anyone they wanted, including, according to your logic, the great Charlie Weis? There is no formula to this, you call you ask you move on until there is interest.

I am curious to see what happens.

Catman88 opined:

[U of Florida is] a better program [than Michigan]

[Oklahoma is ] a better program.

and, feeling his oats, he goes for the trifecta:

[LSU is ] a better program than Michigan

---------------------------------

gosh. let's start with LSU-that is the easiest.

lets summarize the evidence that LSU is a better program than Michigan:

1. More recent mNC.
2. Better winning percentage the last few years
3. Fertile recruiting area

Now let's summarize the reasons Michigan is the better program:

1. Number one all-time in Wins
2. Number one all-time in Winning percentage
3. Michigan is a national program. Has a national fan base, has the NCAAs longest consecutive string of televised games, etc.
4. Michigan has a bigger stadium
5. Michigan has more money
6. Michigan is undertaking a $226 million renovation to the Big House, which will increase the above two margins of difference.
7. Michigan has a long tradition of treating coaches well-for over 100 years.
8. Coaches last much longer at Michigan than LSU or most other places (no coach has ever been outright fired for losing-one coach was fired for drunkness).
9. no coach has EVER left Michigan for the NFL
10. No Coach has EVER left Michigan for another CFB job.
11. Both Meyer and the Tenn HC recently were asked to name the top HCjobs in America-both named Michigan-neither named LSU.
12. At least three big-time HCs have (or have had) out clauses allowing them to leave for the Michigan job: Meyer (at Utah), Holtz (at Minnesota/Arkansas) and Miles at LSU. I have NEVER seen EVEN ONE coach with such an out clause allowing them to leave a job for the LSU job.
13. Michigan has more players in the NFL
14. Michigan has more players make All-American
15. Michigan has more players win the Heisman

I could go on-but this is more than enough.

Someone turn Catman over-he is done on this side.

I would guess, glenn327, that whether or not you think it is a better job depends on whether you live in the past or whether you live in the future. It seems to me that LSU will have an advantage over Michigan for some time now (you know, we even pay our coaches better). We have a more fertile recruiting ground and have won more games.

I guess the biggest reason to go to UM would be to play ND, Wisconsin, Illinois and Penn State rather than Tenn, UGA, UF, AU every year.

Yes, but the vast majority of LSU (and SEC) fans would find Michigan boring. The football is boring, the Big 10 is boring, the large crowd in Michigan stadium is dull and boring. Plus its cold.

Someone pull you out of the past... Seriously DID I NOT say dont come back with thie history BULL shite? Thats all it is HISTORY. LSU is a powerhouse compared to Florida if you bring history into it. However both was on the same playing field today. By your ignorant logic Notre Dame would have easily hired Meyer and he wouldnt have chosen Florida.

But I love how you pad your numbers with bull shite.. Michigan has never had a coach the NFL would want. Michigan has one of the most boring stadium in all of sports. Hell golf matches make more noise.

13. Michigan has more players in the NFL

You sure about this??

The SEC produces the most NFL prospects. Louisiana and MS produce the most NFL prospects per capita in the country.

Michigan lists 39 players and LSU lists 45 players on current NFL rosters.

I just find it hilarious that you say Florida is a better program than Michigan then claim Michigan is better than LSU because of HISTORY..

first-where did I say Florida is a better program than Michigan?

you guys keep saying Meyer chose UF over ND. Meyer had already committed to UF when the ND job opened up again.

and-as to the number of former players in the NFL All-time roster lists are here: LINK .

LSU has 244 players who played one or more seasons in the NFL. Michigan has 305.

Michigan has 6 NFL hall of famers, LSU has 3.

Current (2006) rosters show 36 players who attended LSU, and 42 who attended Michigan. (source: LINK ).

what are your sources?
