Nielsen played DT at USC between 1997 and 2001 and was a GA in 2002. O was the DL coach from 1997-2004.

So O recruited this guy, coached this guy, mentored this guy as a GA.

He then turned around and gave him his first FBS job at Ole Miss in 2005.

This is as close to a protege as O has and the guy’s career has gone mostly one way, up.

He’s going to run the defense O wants. He’s gonna recruit and coach a monster 4 man DL, and get after QBs.

Fine with me. It’s O’s arse on the line so either this works or it doesn’t.

The last DC was purportedly going to "run the defense O wants." I don't want a DC who "runs the defense O wants." I want a DC who doesn't allow opponents to gain the 4th most yards per game in ALL of college football and MOST passing yards in all of college football.

If O was a great defensive mind he would just run his own defense. He doesn't and he can't. LSU needs a DC that can run his OWN defense. Not one that placates the HC's very basic understanding of schematic football. Hopefully Nielsen is that guy.

Who cares what a washed up Pete Carroll says.

The work Nielsen did with the saints front 4 says a whole lot more about him than any words Pete Carroll can say.

Nonsense post

I saidnhe Runs the defense O wants not O’a defense.

Pelini was a lazy hire. That’s doesn’t mean all 4-3 based DCs would be.

I really don't think we're in the running anymore. From what was being said on the recruiting board, when he didn't sign during the ESP and decommitted I pretty much moved on. I believe we're still in his top 5 or whatever but I don't think the staff is spending a lot of time talking to him at this point.

I love how we get a new coach with a lot of upside and some of you feel that it's necessary to take shots at O instead of being happy about the hire.

I sort of get his point. In fact, I do get his point and agree IF you take any sideways (intended or unintentional) shot at CEO out of it.

The way I see it he's talking about "net results" taking precendence over "CEO being comfortable with the hire". And that's the part I agree with. Net results matter. And CEO's comfort evaporated with Pelini as the scores and yardage piled up.

Everybody is comfortable with winning. EVERYBODY. Therefore results matter most. And I think that's what he's getting at.

Now, it just so happens that we might get both with Nielsen. CEO is obviously comfortable with him; and time will tell if he produces the results we need and want. It certainly seems that we just might get both with this hire.

You want a defensive coordinator that will defy the person that hired him?

Sounds like a recipe for success.
