The Rooney Rule is a failure in the pros. Has a black coach ever been hired because of the Rooney Rule, or does it just set up quality black coaches for failure?

I wonder if ND will get the same heat as Auburn did to hire a black coach. It seems that only the teams in the south are constantly criticized.

I think it's a failure because many schools who have a white coach in mind for a job will interview a minority coach based solely on the Rooney rule with no intention of even giving them a shot. I think a good minority coach is going to get the job regardless of the rule.

Nice. I stand corrected. Could Pittsburgh have gotten away with not hiring a black coach?

Eh. They probably would have interviewed Tomlin even without the rule, due to the Rooney factor. However they had to bring in Tomlin and they said they had no intention of hiring him, but he blew them away in the interview.

I find this hard to believe.

Its what they said. He was supposedly 3rd or 4th on their list of candidates before the interview. If you don't remember his hiring was pretty shocking.

Saying "we have no intention of hiring him" is far different than having him #3 or 4 on your list.

Agreed it was shocking because of his age, but I'm guessing the Rooney's knew something about him before they called him.

frick NBC. EVERY TIME THEY DISCUSSED THE FACT THAT THERE WEREN'T MANY BLACK COACHES AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL, THEY SHOWED SEC SCHOOLS. NBC IS A BUNCH OF SOUTHERN-HATING HACKS.

Notre Dame already had a black Football coach, Willingham. That will be the day when Alabama or LSU has one. Credit goes to Miss State in this category.

That is because only folks from the south are racist.

this crap is ridiculous....it's an issue being forced upon sports. What if there aren't any qualified candidates? Someone not in sports is telling the management who should be interviewed. Moron "I feel that you should interview this guy>>>" Exec>>>>"Well, that's the marketing guy"....Moron-"but he's the right color so do it anyway or we'll have every civil rights group on your arse"...

Then you bring him in. Give him a polite interview than don't hire him.

For all the bitching about the Rooney rule it isn't all that effective. NFL teams do it all the time.

Tomlin is the only one I can think of. I heard the local Pittsburgh announcers say one time that had it not been for the Rooney rule ownership would have never given him an interview. They said, if I remember correctly, he was the first interview because of the rule in place. And after they interviewed him, although they still interviewed the other candidates, they knew they were going to hire Tomlin. He impressed them that much. Again, just what the local Pittsburgh announcers said a couple years ago.

This makes no sense.
