Syracuse hired a new AD this year, Mark Coyle from Boise State via Kentucky. Looks like Shafer was doomed from the start.

Shafer had 1 year left on his deal and was kind of stuck in no man's land. Either we had to fire him or extend him and after a lackluster showing the last few weeks, he lost the faith of the fanbase. He was a great guy and the players loved playing for him, but this is a results based business.
