There is information about his accomplishments, just Google it. I think NOLA had an article summing up his creds. On top of turning bad defenses into the best in the conference, he's also known as a great X's and O's guy who's specialty is in-game adjustments and play-calling. God knows how we feel about in-game adjustments on defense.. He's also good with adjusting the defense to match the personnel.

This is all I really need to see.
NFL Ranks with Cardinals
Total Yards D Rank, Scoring D Rank, Rush D, Pass D
04: 21st, 21st, 4th, 24th
05: 25th, 7th, 23rd, 21st
06: 4th, 4th, 17th, 3rd
07: 7th, 6th, 24th, 5th
08: 14th, 5th, 17th, 11th
Cardinals were pretty much trash during that entire time period. Only season they had a winning record was 08 in the super bowl run. That was only 9-7. It looks to me that was good enough to take a team with vastly inferior talent and make them formidable. He was always able to keep teams from scoring, consistently had solid pass D, I'm sure the Rush D being so bad had to do with the terrible personal Arizona had at the time, because in 04 he was able to put up the 4th ranked Rush D.
If he can do it at the highest level, he can surely do it at the college level. Whoever posted those stats from his time at Cal needs to look at this.

Why did he get run in Arizona after the super bowl? On the surface looks to be a homerun.

The guy's got NFL teams bringing him in as a consultant to teach them how to defend spread and option offenses. That speaks volumes.

At both spots he turned shitty defenses into the top in the conference....
The funniest part is look what happened immediately after he left those places. The defenses fell completely off the map. People don't understand just how terrible Cal was and he had the top defense there in the PAC for two straight years.
USC went from 61st to 13th in his one year there. Affer they let him go, they returned 8 of those starters this year and fell all the way to 80th. Cal has been 124th (which was the worst defense in the country last year) both years since he left. They were 71st the year before him and 18th in his first year.
Look, they guy took over crappy Auburn level defenses, and turned them into top 15 and top 20 defenses within his first year. That's with craptastic talent at Cal, and under sanctions at USC.

Neither was Chavis, so any production would be an improvement.
Does he have any connections out in the West? Have him work on some of those boys. LSU has a pretty decent reach, but I'd love to snag some defensive guys out of the West.

He has experience yet isn't old.
He had limited players to work with and did a fantastic job.
He has NFL experience.
How good Chavis was at Tennessee?

I think he was pretty good.
He was there for many years, had good defenses, and won championships.
And LSU was very happy to get him.

the only concern at-least for Miles is that he won't recruit well in the SEC.
He was a grad assistant at miss state. I'm assuming he has a few ties in the south. But frick it, let him wreck Arizona and Cali.

Made Super Bowl several years ago but everyone says it was all due to the O; fired after the game
Check out the defense the year after he was fired. I think they gave up 100pts in 2 playoff games.
And it was probably all due to having a HOF QB. Whisenhunt sucks as a HC in the NFL. Without Warner, he's probably just a footnote in AZ

It's not a homerun hire as they do have risks involved with it. However, if we land coach O with him it's probably about as good as it gets at this point in searching for coaches. My questions about him more lie with his ability to evaluate talent and recruit over the long haul. Looking at who he's coached under and how much they trusted him, I'd say X and Os are not a problem for him.
Worst case scenario is he'll suck and Miles gets canned.

Just to add a little bit of info to the discussion. Pendergast did well at Cal, but to be clear, the talent level on defense was good in 2010, and starred these future NFLers: Cam Jordan, Mychal Kendricks, Chris Conte, Mike Mohamed. However the talent level got progressively worse the next two years.
When Pendergast got hired, the following was a text exchange between some Cal guys regarding the hire. Follet was a Cal linebacker who played briefly with Detroit before retiring with a neck injury. I don't know who Jim Richards is. "Gregory" is former DC Bob Gregory, who I think is LB coach at UW now. You know who Tosh is. The comments by Scott Fujita are interesting.
Zack Follett: I just want to know who this d coordinator is Sent 2:51:11 PM Sat Oct 16 '10
Scott Fujita: Zack...I don't want to be a hater, but I was less than thrilled he got hired. Sent 2:52:07 PM Sat Oct 16 '10
Jim Richards: Seems like it's a feast or famine defense. Offense is no help Sent 2:53:42 PM Sat Oct 16 '10
Zack Follett: Understand.. Say what u want about gregory but we never got embarrassed with him in control.. O well I vote tosh Lupoi ha Sent 2:59:38 PM Sat Oct 16 '10
Scott Fujita: I didn't know Gregory well but I always liked his style. I have a lot of friends who have played for Pendergrast, and their endorsement was not good. Sent 3:01:33 PM Sat Oct 16 '10
Scott Fujita: I'd vote for Tosh...and bring back Matt Beck too!! Sent 3:06:46 PM Sat Oct 16 '10

quote:this quote sounds like Cam or any other journeyman coordinator
Whatever the scheme, Pendergast says the most important thing to being a good defensive coordinator is being able to adjust your system and understanding your own strengths and weaknesses. "And," he says, "being able to fit your players in it and knowing how to make adjustments during the course of a game depending on how someone's trying to attack you."

His defenses at Cal didn't seem great.
He turned them around. They were bottom of the league before he got there and near the top after. Of course, he had some NFL talent to work with like Cameron Jordan and Chris Conti.
So the real questions are about his recruiting.

"The guy's got NFL teams bringing him in as a consultant to teach them how to defend spread and option offenses. That speaks volumes."
There are so many variables when looking at how all of his defenses finished. There is no way to tell where the Cardinals should have finished all those years in regards to talent. But to have credibility within the PROfession truly speaks volumes.
I know this, when he was at Arizona he never had the best defensive backfield in the league to build off of like he would here.= Blitz time

He won't be hired now. Adjustments run counter to Miles' overall philosophy.
