Any but the first would be a great hire.

I know this is not a favorable opinion, but my options would be

Herman - 100% MAKE HIM SAY NO 2 OR THREE TIMES

Petrino - get over him being scum. most coaches are off camera
Mullen - (he's growing on me and I think he would be the least sexy hire, but a damn good coach with our talent)

I don't think Petrino is a fit here. The Gary Patterson option intrigues me if we can't get Jimbo or Herman.

I've always liked Patterson's style of play on defense, and he seems to adjust his offenses when needed.

But, I've heard he is not leaving TCU. If he'd ever be interested, I'd like to see him here, but I usually don't even put his name on a wishlist because I've read numerous times he is entrenched at TCU.

Honestly, and this is pure fanboy speculation, I don't see how ANY coach (not named Meyer and Saban) wouldn't want to come to LSU. Money, recruiting, home-field advantage, SEC, chance to beat Saban every year. I just think it's a no-brainer.

I'm not really against anyone on the list but this is the order I put that list in:
Herman
Jimbo
Patterson
Petrino

If Petrino didn't have a Santa Clause sack of baggage, I would put him 2nd.

Many coaches are less than ethical off camera.

But most of them don't leave their NFL team post-it notes in their lockers announcing their departure for Arkansas, cuss out the opposing coach during the post-game handshake, and crash their motorcycle before being discovered with a mistress whom you put on university payroll, all within a relatively short period of time.

kind of my point.

coaches, married coaches, in locker rooms i've been in recently, talk about the set of tits on the blonde in row 1. or how they bet she could suck the chrome off a trailer hitch.

not the same as actually doing it, but lets not pretend coaches are all of moral character.....which to my point, i don't care what he did to an NFL team, the fire people mid season all the time, so he bailed when he could. big deal. the handshake with Les, classless, but, a sign of his competitive fire, and being a sore loser. the mistress, well, i'm sure he isn't the 1st coach to have an affair. thats between him and his wife. the man can coach.

You will get none of them and your fanbase will melt hard for it.

The manner in which he told the players was the larger point. Not incredibly damning, but still not good.

I think you're grasping at straws here

No, he's not, but placing here on university payroll was extremely reckless and unethical.

I'm not disagreeing with your points, they are true and valid, I'm just saying I think they can be overlooked for how the guy coaches.

on a side note, when I was researching how Nick had left the Dolphins, I was reminded Cam Cameron replaced him, then went 1-15. LOL

This. I was all for him last year over Jimbo (and Herman was still my #1 after reading about him), but from everybody it seems like he wants to retire there, so I have not even added him.

I'm all for Jimbo or Herman, but every time i look at Petrino's resume, it amazes me. The guy can flat out coach, and it doesnt take him very long to get to the top.

I would be ecstatic with any of those three.

Don't forget about the sack of cash to buyout Petrino - $10M. After paying Miles' buyout, LSU would be in for $20M before paying Petrino an actual dollar of salary. It's just not going to happen.

When Petrino was negotiating terms for his contract, he originally agreed to a $50M buyout. That dude is not going anywhere.

Agree.
Jimbo-good solid choice. Almost guaranteed success. Least exciting for base. Looking for forever home in SEC.
Herman-young exciting offensive mastermind. Least experienced. Highest chance of great success or failure! If successful NFL will come calling!
Petrino the man is a tool. Demonstrated high interest in Auburn-SEC (LSU better job in SEC). Left Falcons like a dog. Don't blame him for leaving Vick-less job, but was totally classless. Womanizer, I don't care; even Saban had his Candy. Tried to have Arky subsidize his mistress and got caught. Lesson learned? Excelled at every college HC job. Best, proven head coach that will come here. Probably looking for forever home. Best choice IMO.

Although you are probably correct, this is sad if true. Jimbo is a homerun and our fanbase should be thrilled if we get him.

Here are a couple of "little" details that most don't know about Petrino:

quote:

Later, Petrino said, “I think Tom understands this is where I want to finish my career.”

He joked that contractually, he won’t have much choice. His buyout is $10 million and the contract for seven years and $3.5 million per year. Putting that in perspective, it cost U of L $11 million to leave the American Athletic Conference.

“A buyout to me is not even important. He told me to put $100 million in there,” Jurich (AD) said. “He wants to stay here. He wants 15 years.”

quote:

there were reports that Petrino had discussions with the Oakland Raiders. Jurich said Petrino was offered the job several times, at a salary of up to $5 million annually.

"I thought, 100 percent, he was going to the Raiders," Jurich said. "When he turned that thing down, I knew we had a chance to keep him here for a long time. That's when I went to Bobby about this deal."
