If you're not searching for a coach to beat the best, then why search at all.

I was really excited when I heard Saban was coming to LSU. However, because I was living in Indiana at the time I was probably a little more familiar with him. You could see the attention to detail and intensity back then.

If we can get him, we should hire Herman, keep Aranda as DC and try to keep O as position coach, if possible.

Can we just take a step back and think about the state of LSU football when we hired Saban vs this hire? Honestly, I dont understand how someone thinks at this state in the program we should be accepting anything less than a top tier coach. The biggest "risk" we should take is Herman, and he's not THAT big of a risk, imo.

well, they're all a risk at varying degrees.

The funny thing about LSU fans and Saban is that Saban really wasn't all that special at LSU. He had several WTF games and had one great season then bolted for the NFL.

The NFL is really where the coach we see now was developed. From game planning, to game prep, to in game coaching and talent evaluation all dramatically improved after his return from the NFL.

That's a really good point. I was very excited about Saban because I thought, "hey this guy will make us a winner again" meaning we'll average 8 wins or better a year and go to bowls consistently and possibly win the SEC. That's a much lower bar than what most people want now. I was confident that Saban would clear that bar. In 1999, it would have been laughable for someone to rule out solid coaches because he had never won a championship.

We don't need someone who can build a program like him, we already have that. We need someone who can maintain it like Les, but also be the sort of tactician/football genius that gives him fits if they had the right talent. There are a few guys that could do it.

Dinardo didn't beat him in the indy bowl

Yes he did. NOLA.com Article

From the article
quote:

In fact, the last time LSU faced a Michigan team was in the 1995 Independence Bowl. The team was Michigan State and the coach? Some LSU fans came to love . . . and later not-so-much love, Nick Saban. Both Saban and then-LSU coach Gerry DiNardo were in their first seasons at their schools, and coincidentally, Saban would later replace DiNardo at LSU. DiNardo and the Tigers got the 45-26 victory over the Spartans that day thanks in large part to then-freshman running back Kevin Faulk and the defense.

Maybe so, but as of Sunday, we are outside of the Top 25. Some reality equals "some building"

For those of you who downplaying Saban's coaching abilities -
Skip Bertman once said, "Nick Saban is the best football coach and possibly the best coach in any sport that I've seen in 42 years..."

As much as I hate to see Bama keep winning, I trust Skip's expert opinion on coaching.

Saban wasn't shite till he came to LSU. Louisiana made him a man. If he stayed at those lesser schools, he would have never been able to pull bigtime coordinators. He record speaks for itself, he was no Tom Herman, more like a Charlie Strong.

He wasn't so much of a risk, as he was considered unproven at a high level thus far.

Sports media raved about him even back then, they said he was definitely a brilliant young coach destined to land in the NFL. Him and Kirk Ferentz at Iowa, for whatever that was worth. Saban kept moving on and building, Ferentz stayed and stagnated.

Situation at LSU was far different then, too. Hallman rode the program into the ground. Dinardo breathed life back into it, but honestly, we were still just a team making occasional appearances in the bottom of the top 25, and playing at the Independence Bowl because we'd fill it.

I think we were lucky to have played Michigan State in that bowl. Saban saw our skill players kick the crap out of his coaching, and realized that if he had that talent, he could make a run. When we called, he said yes.

I remember that people were a little iffy about Saban because of his record at the time and because we stomped his MSU team.

I also remember going into the 2003 season he was considered a good coach, but not some sort of elite coach. I remember some sports media guy saying of Saban that he gets more credit for essentially doing nothing than any other coach in college football. He averaged 4 losses a year before the year he won the NC @ LSU. He ended up averaging 3.2 losses a year while he was here. Miles by the way, actually did better, 3.1 losses a year

Nick went 9-2 his last year at MSU and that really boosted his stock. If he hadn't gone 9-2 at MSU he wouldn't have been considered for the LSU job. He did a really good rebuilding program at MSU given the fact he had scholarship limitations due to probation.

if Nick had gone 7-4 his last year at MSU he wouldn't have been hired at LSU and he might have even been fired at MSU.

I guess the name of the coach who turned down the Head Coaching job for the New York Giants before he even came to LSU was not big enough for Skip. Skip is not the man to hire coaches. Thank GOD, Emmert told Skip to do whatever it takes to hire Saban. Left to his own devices, Skip gave us Smoke Laval and Les Miles.
