The LSU brass flew to meet with Glen Mason of Minnesota. He told them no, but recommended they speak to this up and comer coach - Nick Saban. Desperate to come home with a coach they told Jimmy Sexton the check book is blank. They (Sexton and Saban) wanted to be the highest paid coach in the NCAA, and they got it.

Nick left Lansing, on the LSU jet, without telling his players goodbye.

The rest is history.

To people who knew football back then Saban was anything but a risk

Saban was not considered a sure thing hire though and if youre acting like it was then youre over romanticizing his arrival.

Nick Saban had 1 season at MSU that was better than 7-5.

I sure as hell didn't think Saban was a million-dollar coach when he came here.

Because he wasnt. He had 1 good year at MSU surrounded by bad years.

What? Nick Saban was not the highest paid coach in cfb when he arrived at lsu. He wasnt unitl he won the BCSCG. His contract stipulated that if he won the bcscg he would make 1 $ more than the highest paid coach in cfb.

Mason would have won at LSU. He's a good coach, but he met his wife in MPLS and didn't want to leave. The gophers never should have fired Mason.

Mason would have won an SEC title or two at LSU, gone to good bowl games and he would have been in contention for a national title and maybe won one at LSU.

TigerDom, Skip did not hire Saban. Saban's 1st year was 2000 and Skip's last year coaching was 2001. Joe Dean was the AD at the time.

MSU was a mess when Saban got there. The last years of Perles left them on 4 years probation that didn't get announced until after Saban started coaching there.

The NFL is really where the coach we see now was developed. From game planning, to game prep, to in game coaching and talent evaluation all dramatically improved after his return from the NFL

So a guy who spent a good portion of his career prior to LSU coaching in the NFL learned how to be a coach in Miami? How much did he learn when he mailed it in his last year with the dolphins?
