Chad Morris.

He's a lot better than his short record at SMU indicates.

He's young (47), and offensively minded.

He is well connected in the Texas coaching world. He has a great relationship with high school coaches there. He inherited a train wreck at SMU, and hasn't had adequate time to battle for recruits. With talent, he will be a force to be reckoned with.

In 16 seasons as a high school head coach in Texas, Morris compiled a 169–38 record--working his way up through the class ranks and taking multiple teams (from class AA - AAAAA) to state championships. At Lake Travis High School in 2008 and 09, he coached his team (lead by QB Garret Gilbert) to back-to-back 16–0, state-title seasons.

Clemson hired Morris as offensive coordinator and QB coach in 2011, tying him with Gus Malzahn as the highest paid assistant in college football. He stayed there until 2015, when accepted the HC job at SMU.

He inherited a mess at SMU, going 2-10 in his first year, winning only one AAC game. In his second year, the Mustangs have improved thus far to 2-2 in conference, knocking off Tom Herman's Houston 38-16. Of SMU's two conference losses this year, one was to Tulsa in overtime, 43-40.

Trust me, this guy's an up and commer. Any Texas high school coach will tell you he's going places. He will be coaching at a power 5 school eventually. With LSU talent, he could be phenomenal.

I think a Chad Morris is a hell of a coach. Great tactician that could run a high profile program. The only issue is he doesn't have enough skins on the wall.

He might prove to be a great head coach in time, and he may have SMU headed in the right direction, but he still needs to prove it on the field. That 2-10 may not be his fault, but it was just last season. He needs to build more of a track record as head coach before being trusted with a job like LSU.

Don't let those that advocate Herman for coach see this.

If he attains certain criteria during the remainder of the season going against 3 top 10 ranked opponents in four games, why not. If he doesn't then LSU can look elsewhere.

the more I read this board and research the candidates mentioned, the more I realize that I really don't like any of them. Coach O can prove he deserves the job just as much if not more based on how his team performs over the next 4 weeks.

Are you really using Morris' achievements as a high school coach to prop up his resume?

That's like using your high school GPA to impress a potential employer after you graduated from college.

6-14 overall.

And by the way, nearly every mid-major program is a "mess" when a new coach is brought in. June Jones was one of the most well-respected mid-major coaches in the country when he left Hawaii for SMU. Many people, including myself, thought he would actually do a decent job there. Turns out, SMU is just a shitty program that is forced to compete against far superior schools in-state.

Boise State is one of the only non BCS/Power 5 schools which has maintained consistency for nearly two decades.

If I had nickel for every time I've heard one of you guys or some sports media personality label a coach as an "up and comer", I'd pay an assassin to shoot every one of you.

The day LSU even interviews a sub-.500 coach from SMU is the day I officially withdraw my support for this program and its administrators.

The guy might be a start in the making, much like many of you profess that Fleck is, but you know where he can prove that first? At Kentucky, Purdue, Kansas, Oregon State, Vanderbilt, etc.

Prove to me that you can consistently beat the big boys despite having inferior resources and talent. Prove to me that your resume extends beyond just one offensive coordinator gig at the collegiate level and less than two years of head coaching experience.

Would take him over Coach O even if we knock off Bama.

got to come up with some names. The pool of Herman, Fischer, Fleck, and Orgeron is pretty shallow. There has to be some mid major coach with skins on the wall and plenty of experience (other than Fedora) that could be good candidates for the job.

He has played TCU and Baylor both years. Including those two teams he has faced 6 ranked teams(TCU was not ranked this year). The last time he played a ranked team, he won against the #11 team in the country. Not too bad for someone who coaches at SMU.

You beat me to it. I was about to say the same thing along these lines.

My uncle is a CEO for an oil and gas exploration company in Houston. Before entering that industry he was a football coach who took a 4A school to the state championship. The guy is smart, and knows football. He's also still active in the Texas Coaches Association, and plans to retire young from oil and gas, and go back to high school coaching. I say all of this because the attorney in me feels the need to qualify my witness. Anyway, his opinion is that Chad Morris is a just as good a coach as Tom Herman. He also says Morris is the next coach at A&M once Sumlin is gone if someone else doesn't snag him first. I value his opinion on the matter. But that's just an opinion.

If I was making the coaching hire and these two were the only candidates it would be a no brainer. Chad Morris took over a shite-storm and his team is improving. Herman took over a winning team and it appears that his team is getting worse with every passing week. Plus Morris and his SMU team just wiped the field with Herman's ranked team two short weeks ago.

The Auburn coach's claim to fame was coaching high school ball in Arkansas. He is not doing too bad for himself and that was Arkansas high school ball.

Playing is one thing. Winning is another.

Yes, he beat Tom Herman's overachieving Houston team at home. It is easily the program's biggest win in the last decade. Congratulations, you got your team up for a rivalry game.

You still lost games to Temple and Tulsa.

However, one win against a ranked mid-major does not support the claim that he is this great coach in the making.
