Potential candidates to replace Fritz include Troy coach Jon Sumrall, who won his second consecutive Sun Belt Conference championship Saturday and was co-defensive coordinator at Tulane from 2012-14 under Fritz’s predecessor, Curtis Johnson, and Toledo coach Jason Candle, whose team lost to Miami (Ohio) in the Mid-American Conference championship game Saturday after winning the championship in 2022.

Both guys would be really solid hires.

Both have taken lesser programs and done very well.

Sumrall was previously at Tulane so it makes a lot of sense.

I feel like Sumrall could land an ACC job, maybe a lower end SEC job if he waits a little

If he does well at Tulane he would get one within 2 years imo

I’ve heard that Sumrall turned down an interview with Duke. The rumors of him waiting out an SEC job could be true

It’s dumb because he could continue his wait at Tulane and triple his salary on day 1.

Everyone knows Sumrall would have one foot out the door his entire time here and we’re totally cool with that

Tulane has wanted to avoid this. This is why I am shocked outside of the money they didn't give Fritz everything he asked for. He would have stayed for another 5 years and retired.

Tulane should 100% lean into it

Make the best hires, who cares if they view you as a stepping stone.

If you are stepping stone, that means you are winning.

Keep being a stepping stone until you are place people step to

I don't disagree with them leaning into it. It's just crazy that they likely had a chance to keep the coach of their biggest revenue generator for another 5 years and wouldn't do what they had to.

I'm surprised Candle hasn't been on more radars. He has been at Toledo for a while and kept them at a competitive level since Matt Campbell left. I'd also say he's less likely than Sumrall to leave for a bigger opportunity right away.

Only negatives would be that he has spent his entire career in Ohio, and he might be content to hang out in Toledo until certain jobs call.

Sumrall is a heck of a coach and recruiter.

There seems to be a lot of chatter around Blake Baker right now

He’s a former Tulane player - so one of us. Very good DC, but can he lead a full program?

He definitely can connect with recruits.

Baker is not the best possible hire but is not a bad one at all.

Former player, great DC, great recruiter.

Those are all encouraging things but there have been those guys with all that, that weren't HCs.

The Cover 3 guys have said he's the MAC version of Cristobal.

That formula usually doesn't work in CFB.

What did he ask for that they wouldn’t give?

Fritz obviously left for the Big 12 because Tulane didn’t hire the interim AD he wanted

Nah, as he said yesterday and again today in his presser when he was asked why he made the move: His career goal was to coach at the P5 level. He's had success at every other level.

Can't begrudge a man for wanting to try his hand at the top of his profession.

Feldman just posted his list of candidates expected to be looked at:

Sumrall (Troy HC)
Atkins (FSU OC)
Baker (Mizzou DC)
Slade Nagle (current interim HC/OC)
Sloan (LSU QB Coach)

Tulane HC Candidates

Personally hoping for Sumrall.

Mostly to be in the same city as his daughters and grandchildren. His wife was flying back and forth and I am sure the moment Houston opened up that was pretty much it.

The AD was a nonfactor.

Facilities might have been a factor but I think being closer to the grandkids was the deciding factor.

I would think if Houston opened last year he would have gone then as well.
