One thing that seems obvious today is how we probably will have more than one Power 5 coaching job open up but there is only one "hot up and comer" ie Herman.

Once Herman is off the table (due to either the SMU loss or the fact that Texas will probably get him) I see more people declaring they want hot coaches from previous cycles (like Peterson, Fuente, or even Strong) than trying to learn to love the next tier of TODAY's candidates (Fedora, PJ, Rhule, Brohm, etc.).

Obviously a guy like Peterson or Fuente isn't leaving this year, yet this desire indicates to me that for some reason most people (Drac excluded) want to avoid hiring one of these Tier 2 candidates.

Is it because this is a down year for hot coaching names, or is there really that huge of gap between Herman and the rest?

We have no idea who LSU powers see as a "hot up and comer."

It is not about who LSU hires, or who anyone hires. It also isn't about LSU fans, as there will be more than LSU fans hoping for a coaching upgrade this offseason.

Just seems like the pool for universally accepted hot coaches is shallow.

I disagree. There are several, google search then research the ones listed. You may not like them or feel they meet your standard of "hot up and comer".

Herman is just the hot name right now and a lot of people on this site refuse to see past him. Take a guy like Larry Fedora. He won a conference championship at USM and won a division title at NC. Southern is a decent G5 program but were in a pretty serious rut when he took over. North Carolina was a dumpster fire that is now the division favorite year in and year out. Yet his name gets down voted to oblivion if he gets brought up with not a serious reason as to why.

That's just one example but there are a lot of really good coaches in the country. People are just way too tunnel visioned here.

Didn't USM go 0-12 the season after Fedora left? No head coach is that awful. Fedora did an awful job at recruiting to Southern Miss and skipped town before his recruits were asked to run the show. When good coaches leave town, they usually leave a program in good shape for the next coach. Guys like Kiffin and Fedora leave dumpster fires in their wake.

I think you are underestimating how bad of a coach Ellis Johnson was. Larry might not have left it in great shape but Johnson burned it to the ground before he ever coached a game.
