Moscona just said he would be "very surprised" if Derek Mason/Bo Davis do not happen

I don't want Mason really, but I really want Bo Davis.

Maybe this could work.

Does Derek Mason prefer a 4-3? Just curious, can't remember.

Makes perfect sense. Orgeron loves hiring retreads. It could work out. He was once a good defensive coach.

Well TD insiders called Davis before scone.

Perhaps mason is ok but I’m not a huge fan of retreads at this point

He was the DC at Vandy at times. I will never hold failing at Vandy against a head coach if you are looking to hire them as a coordinator.

People (as I have in the past) point to Vandy's horrible defenses under Mason, but I was corrected on here and told the one year he took over DC responsibilities for the team, Vandy had a top 25 defense.

I think Mason would be a decent hire, but not some homerun. He was much worse at recruiting to Vanderbilt than his predecessor James Franklin, who proved you can recruit there somewhat decently.

A young black experienced guy like Mason is an excellent hire. He is extremely well liked here, very sharp, and just can’t get players to compete year in & out at Vandy. He is a very good hire.

Is this because of budget constraints? Hire a guy who's getting paid by a former employer and you can pay him below market value?

If we accept that offenses have evolved past anything we've ever seen before, we need our defenses to have evolved as well. Pelini didn't know what to do against the modern passing attack at all this year.

I think we need more of an attacking style DC. If our guys have to read and react they aren't as good as they could be. They aren't built like a Stanford d that relies on smarts to hold you down. Our d is filled with athletes.

I think the offensive revolution is pretty new as well say 2016 - on so. if you have been a head coach for a few years then you haven't been against the modern new offenses.

LSU clearly didn't adapt until 2019 Bama was probably end 17 early 18 to this whole new style.

I could see that working and would not object. He does know the landscape of the SEC. Vandy is a tough place for anyone to be really successful. He did have some success but this year they were hit hard with Covid and Opt Outs. They usually always played hard under Mason.

Mason always had defenses that played hard...just very little talent to compete in the SEC.

He was a very poor recruiter at Vanderbilt. We can't afford to have a non-recruiter at such a big time position.
