If this has been discussed ad nauseum I apologize.

Does anyone else think that Miles would have gone to Michigan in 2007 if Herbstreit doesn't run his mouth? I for one think he would have. When Herbie reported that stuff, Les was in a no win situation and had to deny it knowing that we still had a shot at the BCSNCG plus we were playing for the SEC championship that day.

I was discussing this with some other co-workers/football geniuses and they seemed to agree.

Anyone have opinions on this?

Pretty much this. Herbstreit blew it for Michigan.

He hates Ohio State so much, he didn't want an OSU alum being proved right.

I wonder if Michigan fans are still pissed at Herbie. I might go to the MSB and find out.

You don't renege on a multi-million dollar job, because a young smartshit broadcaster runs his mouth. Adults do not do business that way.

i'm in the camp that miles wanted mich more than they wanted him. he had the unfortunate luck (well sort of) of the mich job coinciding with the NC year. any other year and his agent is all over Um's phone.

i didn't even think mich's AD wanted him in 07. 2010 = new AD. new circumstances, no NC to play in .....

I'm on the fence. I'm like 55/45 he would have gone. I'm sure he was happy here. But I also think after we win the BCSCG, he would have had some real tough coices. Choices he wasn't able to think about since Herbie blew it for him.

You can either believe me or not... Miles was as good as gone until the plane ride home... When the announcement was made that Pitt just upset W. Va, Miles was lining up his Michigan coaching staff... After the announcement, one assistant said to Miles,"we can't leave we are playing for the National Championship". I personally want Miles to stay.. He is a peculiar guy, but he has done well in recruiting, and has done a good job in hiring assistants. I must admit that i do think a change is needed at the offensive coordinator spot...

I think this is exactly right. There was no way that Miles could pass up the chance to play in the title game.No dream job is worth that.

All Herbstreit did was force Miles to lie on national TV to keep from destroying his team's chances to focus on the SEC championship game.

It wasn't just about being pissed

he was about to play in the NC and you only get so many chances at that in your lifetime (maybe only one)... he didn't want the distraction to interfere with the game so he ended it

But yes IMO - without that story he probably goes to Michigan

I don't buy that the Herbstreit "Miles to Michigan" announcement had anything to do with it. If West Virginia had beaten Pitt that day, it would have been WVU-Ohio State in the title. I think that would have opened the door for Michigan to get Miles. Miles stayed with LSU because he still had a chance at a National Title and is a stand up guy who is going to stick with his team when they are in that situation.

Or it could have been that Miles wanted to leave, but our AD at the time panicked because he was caught so off guard by Lloyd Carr retiring. Miles wanted to come to Michigan, but our old AD never took the calls for whatever reason and offered Schiano before deciding on Rich Rod. Many different theories as to why Miles did not end up at Mich that year....

i cant believe he had a presser like he did that saturday before the SEC championship game, adamantly said hes LSU's coach and hes not looking around and then is lining up assistants on the way home.

i dont believe all the reports that miles was never offered the michigan job and was just the over-zealous girlfriend blowing up michigan's phone and they werent interested. i think thats bullshite and a way of them saving face. i believe a deal was done, he was going to go and herbstreit outed it, and miles' hand was forced and he- for whatever reason- picked the LSU route over michigan.

i have no sources or inside info

I've been saying this all along. Herbie let the cat out of the bag too soon. This is why I believe Miles will not pass up a second opportunity to coach at Michigan.
