Per SI

Toledo head coach Matt Campbell has emerged as the front-runner for Iowa State’s head coach vacancy and a deal is expected in the next 48 hours, according to sources.

That's a bad job to take. Campbell needs to chill and his big payday will come. ISU is where coaching careers go to die.

eta: ESPECIALLY when the in-state rival is sitting at 12-0 right now.

Terrible decision by Campbell. Rhoads did a pretty good job manage a few bowls and a couple major upsets. That place ia brutal to try and compete. You are behind everyone in a round robin league but Kansas and have Iowa in state.

4-8 is pretty much the expectation for an average coach. A really good coach and it's maybe 6 or 7 wins.

Iowa usually takes 3 years off between good seasons so it's a good time if you're going to ISU.

This.

ISU is probably the second worst/toughest job in the Big 12. Hell, even Johnny Majors couldn't win there before taking the Pitt job.

I'm willing to bet that if Campbell would've waited a few days, he could've gotten a Big Ten job like Illinois.

In the story I wrote the biggest thing his agent should do is wait for the first wave of hirs and get Campbell in at Houston/Memphis/Navy etc.

The schools those guys are leaving will have better talent and more money than Iowa St. or Toledo.

Or you go full on after the S.Carolina/Mizzou/Miami jobs.

After the Beckman experiment, I don't think he'd go there. Although I agree with your premise overall.

That said, he's a solid coach, but ISU is a rough job.

it's where he should be going.

He's done nothing that others at Toledo haven't done. Although i think Pinkel and the fat guy won Division titles.

He had a talented team and wet down his leg, both times at home. He is where he should be, he's done nothing special to get a decent p5 gig.
