Let's be clear before getting into the meat of this: No, the Michigan State head coach is not rumored to be considering the job. No, we don't know for sure if LSU has him on its list. No, it's not at all likely Dantonio would pull a Nick Saban and leave the Spartans to coach the Tigers.
But as writers begin speculating on possible LSU targets, Dantonio is starting to appear on a few lists, including CBS Sports writer Tom Fornelli's and The Advocate's Scott Rabalais. And why not? Dantonio has done a phenomenal job in East Lansing, winning three Big Ten championships, winning a Rose Bowl and reaching the College Football Playoff last year.
"OK, here's the theory," Fornelli opined. "Dantonio has been incredibly successful at Michigan State. What he's done there is nothing short of remarkable. But look around him right now. Dantonio, as good as he's been, is sharing a division with Urban Meyer's Ohio State juggernaut and a Michigan program that appears on the verge of becoming a real power again under Jim Harbaugh. Maybe now is the best time for Dantonio to move on. If you combine his ability as a coach with the recruits he can land at LSU, well, just think about what he could possibly do there. Nobody expects it to happen, but this would be a home run hire for LSU if it found a way to pull it off."

Isn't he getting paid more than Les at LSU?
I find it hard to believe he would leave MSU at this point

He's a little old and had a grabber a few years ago. The only thing that might make him jump is if he thinks the MSU golden era is coming to an end. But, he has been ripping out OSU and Mich hearts, so I doubt that.

Good coach but kind of old. I think excluding the prospect of Jimbo, LSU wants to go a little younger with this hire and bring some young energy into the program.

He's 60. I don't think it would be a terrible hire, but it would be a short term fix

I thought they wanted someone young, with a different style. Dantonio is the Les Miles of the Big 10

Sure sounds like they are trying to imply that the SEC West won't compare to "the juggernaut" of facing tOSU and Michigan yearly?

He would be for LSU, but I doubt he's leaving MSU. But the main idea should be that LSU does not have to have a guy who's young.
If Dantonio gives you 7 great years and a National Title then fine and do the same thing 7 years later.

Its just too much of a lateral move honestly
What is in it for him? He is the big man on campus at MSU that made them nationally relevant. He has been in B1G country his entire life. He gets paid 5 mil a year already.
Its just not happening

His age would be no issue in the NFL where 6 years or so coaching team is average.
I think the age issue is not an issue. You want to win and if a guy can win in 5 to 6 years then great and hire another good time when he retires.

NFL doesn't work like college. You can't afford a placeholder. A college coach has to completely overhaul the entire roster every few years

Exactly. Old age becomes something for other coaches to harp on to prospects. You've gotta sell that you'll be there all 4-5 years that the player will be there.
